Density of Culex vishnui and appearance of JE antibody in sentinel chicks and wild birds in relation to Japanese encephalitis cases.

In the District of Burdwan, a rural area of West Bengal State, India, Japanese encephalitis (JE) virus is endemic. In one village a longitudinal survey was conducted in order to find out whether associations could be established between the density of the vector mosquito Culex vishnui in two types of resting places, the incidence of infections in sentinel chicks exposed at monthly intervals, the prevalence of antibodies in wild birds and the occurrence of clinical infections in the human population. The experiment lasted from August 1981 till August 1982. Meteorologically a summer season (March-June), a rainy season (July-October) and a winter season (November-February) are distinguished. In the sentinel chicks infections were observed in all three seasons; in wild birds antibodies were prevalent throughout the year; these observations suggest perennial transmission of the virus in its maintenance cycle. Human infections were observed periodically with, in August 1982, a pronounced peak; this may point to fluctuations in the level of circulation of the virus in its maintenance cycle and spillover to the human population at times of peak circulation. The peaks may be related to the influx of young non-immune birds and newborn mammals into the animal population in summer. Further studies, including virus isolation attempts from mosquitoes and nestling birds, are required to prove this hypothesis.

Effect of alpha 2u-globulin on serum concentration of gonadotrophins and testicular activity in oestrogen-treated rats.

Adult male rats were given injections of oestradiol-17 beta (50 micrograms/100 g body wt per day) for 7 days. When they were killed 14 days after the last injection, serum levels of gonadotrophins and testosterone and weights of accessory sex organs were less, testicular 17 beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (17 beta-HSD) activity was suppressed and spermatogenesis was inhibited. Administration of alpha 2u-globulin (1.5 mg/day) for 14 days to oestrogen-treated rats and for 10 days to control rats resulted in increased concentrations of gonadotrophins and testosterone in the serum. Accessory sex organ weight and spermatogenesis appeared to be normal while 17 beta-HSD activity increased in oestrogen-treated rats after treatment with alpha 2u-globulin. It was concluded that alpha 2u-globulin has an effect on testicular function in oestrogenized rats by inducing gonadotrophin and testosterone synthesis.

Effect of nutritional status on the circulatory gonadotrophin levels in girls before puberty.

Circulating luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) levels were investigated in prepubertal girls (aged 6 to 10 years) showing evidence of varying degrees of either stunting and wasting or both, due to protein-energy malnutrition (PEM). Both serum LH and FSH levels in all the subjects with either grade 1 or 2 type of stunting and no wasting, or grade 1 type of wasting and no stunting, showed no noticeable variations from the corresponding hormonal levels of the normals. However, a low serum FSH level was observed in one subject with grade 3 type of stunting. Amongst the subjects with both stunting and wasting, those with a combination of grade 1 type of stunting and wasting, serum hormonal levels were comparable to the normals. On the other hand, those with more severe degrees of wasting and stunting had low levels of serum LH and FSH, particularly of FSH. It is suggested that the low levels of these gonadotrophins may be responsible for the delay in the onset of menarche commonly encountered in cases of PEM.

Host preference of Phlebotomus argentipes in different biotopes.

A study on host preference of P. argentipes in two different biotopes was conducted by capturing the flies from cowsheds and human dwellings. The human blood index of P. argentipes collected from cowsheds was 21.5% and 69.6% when collected from human dwellings; this indicates that host preference of P. argentipes varies widely in different biotopes.

Circulating gonadotropin profile in severe cases of protein calorie malnutrition.

The circulating levels of luteinizing hormone (LH), follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), and prolactin (PRL) were studied in children of both sexes between 2 and 14 years of age who were suffering from severe protein calorie malnutrition (PCM), namely, kwashiorkor, marasmic kwashiorkor, and marasmus. LH and FSH levels in all the age groups and in all forms of PCM were found to be significantly lowered, thereby explaining the possible delay in the onset of puberty in these children. Circulating PRL levels, on the other hand, were significantly raised in all patients with PCM studied, with values in children with kwashiorkor and marasmic kwashiorkor higher than in children with marasmus, possibly accounting for the presence of edema in the former cases. The present work, therefore, proposes a possible correlation between gonadotropin levels and PCM in children.

Prolactin suppression and spermatogenic developments in maturing rats. A quantitative study.

Prolonged suppression of prolactin (PRL) in immature male rats inhibits the spermatocyte-spermatid conversion process, alters leydig cell morphology, decreases accessory sex organ weight and increases serum LH levels without a significant alteration in serum FSH concentration. Amelioration of these effects by exogenous PRL strongly indicates that in the absence of PRL excess titers of endogenous LH fail to exert an influence on the spermatogenic activity of maturing testes.

Biochemical studies on molybdenum toxicity in rats: effects of high protein feeding.

Chronic oral administration of ammonium molybdate in rats markedly retarded the growth rate of rats and high protein diet could partially reverse this condition. The activities of several enzymes viz. acid phosphatase, alkaline phosphatase, glucose-6-phosphatase, succinic dehydrogenase, glutamate oxaloacetate transaminase, inorganic pyrophosphatase and acetylcholinesterase in different tissues and serum levels of luteinizing hormone, follicle stimulating hormone, prolactin and cortisol are altered due to the toxicity conditions and high protein diet fed group of animals showed almost normal values in respect of a few of these parameters. Normal histological pattern of both liver and kidney tissues were altered under molybdenum toxicity condition. Significant increase of basophilic substances are observed in the cytoplasm of the liver cells of the toxic group of animals which is counteracted by feeding high protein diet.
