[Their clinical correlation (author's transl)].

Morphometric studies of biopsied sural nerves were performed among 16 diabetic patients (14 with polyneuropathy and 2 without polyneuropathy). Main clinical findings at the time of biopsy were reviewed retrospectively and the correlations between clinical findings (the presence or absence of sensory disturbance, motor disturbance, retinopathy and pain, and the duration of sensory disturbance) and nerve fiber densities were analyzed. The following results and conclusions were obtained. 1) Decrease of densities of both myelinated and unmyelinated fibers was found in 9 out of 16 cases. Decrease of the density of unmyelinated fibers in diabetic patients was noticeable among over 100 cases of various neuropathies studied by us. Both myelinated and unmyelinated fibers seem to be decreased with the duration of sensory disturbance. 2) In teased fiber analysis myelinated fibers showing axonal degeneration as well as segmental demyelination were seen at relatively lower frequency. Onion bulb formation was found only in one case out of 16 cases. Therefore it was concluded that axonal degeneration is probably the main pathological change in sural nerves in this study, considering the decrease of nerve fiber densities as well. 3) The mean thickness of the perivascular space of endoneurial small vessels in diabetic patients was greater than that of the control (32 consecutive patients of various neuropathies). 4) No good correlations were found between the presence or absence of motor disturbance, pain and retinopathy, and the nerve fiber densities.

[Studies of solid ovarian tumors in Tokai District (author's transl)].

The prognosis of patients with ovarian carcinoma is believed as worst among malignant diseases in the field of gynecology. Multiple factors including clinical stage, histologic type and grade may play an important role in the prognosis of patients. Because of these factors and the few cases of ovarian carcinoma seen in any one center over a short period, the ability to make valid evaluation of these factors has been limited. We organized ovarian tumor studying group in Tokai district with eleven member hospital and analyzed 453 cases of solid ovarian tumor retrospectively. 1) Cumulative survival rate was calculated according to the clinical stages. Five year survival rate of stage 1 was about 80%, that of stage 2 was about 30% and that of stage 3 and stage 4 were around 10% respectively. 2) Cumulative survival rate was calculated according to histologic types. There was minor variation of survival by histologic types. When we compared with different histologic types by same clinical stages such as stage 1 and stage 3 there was no definite differences of survival rate except slightly poor prognosis in case of mucinous cystadnocarcinoma. 3) Cumulative survival rate was calculated according to histologic grading. Histologic grade affects the prognosis of patients with ovarian carcinoma.

[Anterior pituitary function in patients with cerebrovascular disease: with special reference to growth hormone secretion in response to TRH administration (author's transl)].

HGH secretion in response to TRH was studied in patients with cerebrovascular disease in order to elucidate an influence of cerebrovascular lesions on the hypothalamus-anterior pituitary function. Blood specimens were obtained before and at the time of 10, 20, 30, 40, 60, 90 and 120 minutes after the intraveneous administration of 200 microgram of TRH in 17 patients with cerebral hemorrhage and in 8 patients with cerebral infarction. With regards to the natural fluctuations of serum HGH caused by cerebrovascular disease, the blood specimens were obrained at the time of 0, 30, 60, 90 and 120 minutes without the administration of TRH in 4 patients with cerebral hemorrhage and in 4 patients with cerebral infarction. Serum HGH was measured using the RIA method and the following results were obtained: 1) An increase in serum HGH was observed in 1 patient with cerebral hemorrhage out of 8 patients with cerebrovascular disease without TRH administration. 2) In 5 out of 17 patients with cerebral hemorrhage, an increase in serum HGH was observed following TRH administration. Three out of these 5 patients were included in the group of non-coma, and 4 out of the 5 patients were female. 3) In 2 out of 8 patients with cerebral infarction, an increase in serum HGH was observed following TRH administration.

Relationships of curiosity to perceptual and verbal fluency in young children.

The relations of curiosity measured separately by teachers' rating and a revised object-curiosity task to verbal fluency and originality, measured by a work fluency test, and to perceptual fluency, obtained from the "Visual Closure" test of the Illinois Test of Psycholinguistic Abilities, were examined in 60 5- to 6-year-old boys. Although teachers' ratings of curiosity were contaminated by MA, they were significantly related to fluency in verbal recall and less strongly to fluency in visual exploration and verbal originality even when wht effect of MA was held constant. Object curiosity, which was negatively correlated with MA, showed at best negligible covariation with these three measures.

Binding sites between platinum (II) and uracil derivatives.

The complexes of triammineplatinum with uracil, 6-methyluracil, or uridine were prepared in aqueous solution at pH 7. The reaction of uracil with triammineplatinum gave two complexes at the same time. One was a complex in which triammineplatinum displaced a proton from uracil and coordinated to the N(3) position, and the other the complex coordinated to the N(1) position by displacing a proton. When triammineplatinum was treated with 6-methyluracil or uridine in aqueous solution at pH7, only a complex coordinated to the N(3) position was obtained. The ultraviolet (UV), NMR, and infrared (IR) spectral data provide useful information for determining the binding site of these complexes. The UV and IR spectral behaviors of the complex coordinated to the N(3) of uracil are very similar to those of 3-methyluracil. The NMR spectrum of the complex coordinated to the N(1) of uracil exhibits satellite peaks of 195Pt-proton and its coupling constant (39 Hz) gives good evidence for determining the binding site at the N(1) position.

Antitumor activity of 1,2-diaminocyclohexane--platinum complexes against sarcoma-180 ascites form.

Platinum complexes derived from three isomers of 1,2-diaminocyclohexane have been synthesized and their antitumor activities were evaluated against ascites Sarcoma-180. All the platinum complexes had high antitumor activity. Platinum complexes derived from cis-1,2-diaminocyclohexane were more effective than those derived from trans-l-and trans-d-1,2-diaminocyclohexane. Among the platinum complexes tested, oxalato(cis-1,2-diminocyclohexane)platinum had a remarkably high therapeutic index. Modification of the nonleaving group as well as that of the leaving group is important in order to find better antitumor platinum complexes.

Reconstruction of the superior vena cava in a patient with a thymoma.

Surgical treatment was attempted in a 71-year-old man who had superior vena caval syndrome caused by incomplete obstruction of the superior vena cava with a thymoma. Using a temporary internal shunt, the superior vena cava was almost entirely resected together with the tumor and reconstructed by autogenous venous grafts. Patency of the reconstructed vein was proved by angiography one year after the operation. He has been asymptomatic for 15 months after surgery.

D-Glucose anomeric preference of hexokinases in higher animals.

The D-glucose anomeric preference of hexokinases isolated from rat liver, brain, and skeletal muscle, and bovine retina was studied using the glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase-NADP system. The ratios of maximum phosphorylation rates of beta-D-glucose to those of alpha-D-glucose were 1.33, 1.46, and 1.54 for hexokinase types I, II, and III from rat liver, 1.45 and 1.63 for type I from rat brain and bovine retina, 1.53 for type II from rat skeletal muscle, and 0.55 (when determined at 5 mM) for type IV (glucokinase) from rat liver, respectively.
