A new test using N-benzoyl-L-tyrosyl-p-aminobenzoic acid (N-BT-PABA) for an evaluation of exocrine pancreatic function was compared with a pancreozymin-secretin test in 38 subjects. Urinary recovery of PABA, which is absorbed from the intestine and conjugated in the liver after an oral administration of N-BT-PABA, depends mainly on chymotrypsin activity. The recovery rate of PABA in urine decreases in chronic pancreatitis, in which chymotrypsin activity in the duodenal juice is disturbed. The recovery rate of PABA in calcifying chronic pancreatitis was 40.2 +/- 15% and significantly less than 81.2 +/- 7.4% in normal subjects (P less than 0.01). The amount of PABA in urine during eight hours was correlated with parameters of volume output- bicarbonate concentration and amylase output stimulated by injections of pancreozymin and secretin (P-S test). The new test using N-BT-PABA is useful for the evaluation of exocrine pancreatic function in general practice.

A mouse mutation brachypodism was detected in an inbred strain of mouse (NC) maintained by National Institute of Animal Health (Ministry of Agriculture). An attempt was made in this paper to reveal the mode of inheritance and the pattern of growth of this mutant. 1. From the results of crossing tests, it might be concluded that an autosomal recessive gene (brp, linkage group V) was responsible for the occurrence of the brachypodism. 2. Body weights of brachypod mice (brp/brp) were smaller than those of normal mice (+/brp) from the delivery, and this tendency was remarkable with age.
A simple apparatus was made for the X-ray fluorescent analysis of iodine concentration of the thyroid. The apparatus consists of 241Am gamma-ray source of 300mCi and pure Ge detector of 50mm2X5mm. Diverging collimator was designed to achieve a full view of the thyroid. The detectable concentration was 0.2mg iodine/g tissue assuming the coefficient of variance of 30% and the counting time of 5 minutes. Measurement was performed for autopsied 10 thyroids and the results were in good correlation with those by neutron activation analysis (r=0.93). Iodine concentration ranged 0.3-1.2mg/g (mean 0.6mg/g) and compared well with the data in literatures. This technique is useful for the in vivo measurement of thyroidal iodine content in patients.
