Cadmium, copper, and zinc in rice produced in Java.

Cadmium (Cd), copper (Cu) and zinc (Zn) contents in 116 polished and unpolished rice samples produced in the Java Islands of Indonesia were assessed as a base-line study of trace metals. Arithmetic means and one standard deviation were 0.040 +/- 0.042 ppm Cd, 2.93 +/- 1.11 ppm Cu, and 18.17 +/- 3.13 ppm Zn. Concentration ratio of Cd to Zn was 0.00220 +/- 0.00222. The correlation coefficients between the metals were low. The two highest samples of rice contained 0.27 and 0.34 ppm Cd. Using the fact that Indonesians consume about 300 g of rice, the daily intake of Cd would exceed the tolerable limit proposed by FAO/WHO and could cause slight chronic renal damage to the rice eaters. Soil type by suborder and rice variety gave little difference of the three metals content in rice. Rice samples from West Java, where major soil type by order is Ultisol, contained higher cadmium and zinc, and lower copper than those from East Java (Vertisol).

Uptake of thallium-201 in enlarged thyroid glands: concise communication.

We have investigated the thyroid uptake of Tl-201 in 37 patients with various types of goiter, and in six with normal thyroids. Significant thallium uptake was found in all cases in which there was thyroid enlargement, including Graves' disease, toxic thyroid nodule, primary hypothyroidism, simple goiter, Hashimoto's disease, thyroid carcinoma, and thyroid adenoma. If goiter was absent, however, there was no demonstrable uptake--e.g., in secondary hypothyroidism, subacute thyroiditis, and the normal controls. Thallium uptake did not correlate with thyroid function tests such as BMR, T3-RU, T3, T4, TSH, antithyroid antibodies, or the 24-hr I-131 uptake. In 23 patients with diffuse goiter, on the other hand, maximum Tl-201 uptake correlated well with thyroid weight: r = 0.836 (p less than 0.001); y = 0.02 x + 0.06.

High spatial resolution CT with a synchrotron radiation system.

OBJECTIVE: We describe a monochromatic X-ray CT system using synchrotron radiation, which has been constructed employing a vertical wiggler beam line at the National Laboratory for High-Energy Physics in Tsukuba, Japan. This CT system was produced to facilitate examination of the microstructures of material and biological specimens. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The system provides excellent contrast and has a spatial resolution capacity ranging from 2 to 100 mm. In this preliminary experiment, the images of the rat were obtained at 36-mm slice thickness and 33.2-keV X-ray energy. RESULTS: The nasal cartilage, skull, and teeth of a live rat were clearly demonstrated with 36-mm spatial resolution. CONCLUSION: Using a monochromatic X-ray CT system with synchrotron radiation, detailed structures of rat skull were imaged clearly.
