Role of conducting airways in partial separation of inhaled gas mixtures.

A positive (hollow) cast of the bronchial tree was made from a pig's lung. Gas mixtures containing sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) and helium (He), and SF6 and argon (Ar), were blown down the cast at two different flows, the cast having first been filled with air. Gas was sampled by a mass spectrometer probe from 1-mm-diam branches situated on short, medium, and long pathways. The front of the SF6 appeared in advance of the fronts of the He and the Ar. This relative advancement was greater a) with the SF6/He mixture than with the SF6/Ar mixture; b) at slower flows; and c) on longer pathways. With reverse flow up the cast using SF6/He there was little differences between the arrival times of the two gas fronts at either flow. These results could be explained by the effects of Taylor dispersion on gases having different diffusion coefficients.

Diameter, length and branching ratios in the bronchial tree.

This paper is concerned with morphology and pattern of branching in the bronchial tree and their interrelationships. Branching ratio (Rb), diameter ratio (Rd), and length ratio (R1) are the factors by which the number of branches, mean diameter and mean length increase in successive orders of branching. An analysis based on the concept of minimum work suggests that ideally Rd = R1/3 b, whilst geometric considerations suggest that R1 = R1/3 b. Thus Rd = R1. These theoretical results are compared with those obtained from measuring one human and six dog bronchial tree casts. Values obtained from the human lung are in close agreement with the predicted values, whilst in the dog lungs the agreement, though less good, is still close. Rb is determined antenatally, the reason for its particular value being unknown. Diameter and length of branches may be modelled postnatally by growth in a manner which ensures that Rd = R1 - R1/3 b.

Morphology of the bronchial tree in the dog.

Polyester resin casts were made of the bronchial trees from three adult dogs. The branches were ordered by the method of Strahler and the number of branches in each order counted. The length and diameter of each branch was measured and the mean dimensions of branches in each order calculated. When number, mean diameter and mean length of branches in each order are plotted semilogarithmically against order, linear relationships are found. From the data thus obtained a dimensional model of the dog's bronchial tree has been developed.

Serological diagnosis of tuberculosis: a report of 12 months' clinical experience.

This study reports the use of an agglutination test as a routine diagnostic aid for tuberculosis. We have found this to be both useful and reliable in clinical practice. The overall reliability was greater than 90%, 13 false results being obtained in the 222 patients tested. False negatives (4) were less common than false positives (9). The major advantage of the test is its speed, serological diagnosis being available overnight as compared with an average of one month for diagnosis by culture.
