The achievements of two medical officers in the Austrian imperial military forces in the second half of the 19th century are enumerated and honoured. The distinguished services rendered by the brothers Franz and Leopold Seligmann in connection with the "Novara" expedition (1857-1859) and the prevention of a cholera epidemic (1873) are described in this paper to prevent their attainments from falling into oblivion. The eldest brother, Romeo Seligmann, founded the Chair of the History of Medicine at Vienna University in 1848 and was the first professor of this discipline.
Regular lectures in the history of medicine were held after 1833 by Romeo (Roman) Seligmann (1808 to 1892). Only after 15 years of uninterrupted activities in the field he was appointed professor, and after another 2 years he was granted a salary.
The Vienna Chair for the History of Medicine was founded in 1848, and the History of Medicine Department has been in existence since 1907-1913. Karel Frederik Wenckebach, the famous specialist in internal medicine, who died exactly 50 years ago, was instrumental in creating a permanent domicile for this institute in 1920, in the historical building of the Vienna Military Medical Academy (Joseph's Academy).

Psoriasis appears to be a very old disease. Notwithstanding that, it has been described as a clinical entity only in the early 19th century. By the end of that century, psoriasis comprised a spectrum of clinical variants which have remained almost unchanged since. And despite a wealth of new information on this disease, both etiology and pathogenesis are still elusive and a matter of discussion and controversy in our days. A perspective as to the state of the art 100 years ago is presented.
Albert Reder von Schellmann (1826-1904) was an important syphilidologist of the Vienna Medical School in the second half of the nineteenth century. He went in for the dualistic concept of the origin of syphilis and ulcer caused by soft chancre. In 1870 - Reder became head of a third dermato-syphilidologic department in the "Josephinum" in Vienna, where military surgeons got their medical education. At the same time the two full professorships of dermatosyphilidology in the Vienna General Hospital were held by Ferdinand von Hebra (1816-1880) and Carl Ludwig Sigmund von Ilanor (1810-1883).

During a century of development of investigative dermatology (1880s-1980s), the center of gravity in the field has moved west, from Europe to North America. The foundation of the American Dermatological Association, the discipline's oldest national society, has forshadowed this development. The foundation of the Society for Investigative Dermatology (and also of the American Academy of Dermatology), have marked the height of this shift. The foundation of the European Society for Dermatological Research and its participation in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology, as a junior partner, concludes this process, and at the same time, illustrates the change that has taken place. The following article attempts to outline some of the pathways along which this shift has occurred, as seen from a central European perspective.
