[Is surgery for infections of the maxilla and face still justified? (author's transl)].

Based on the authors' studies and on publications by others from the Vienna Department of Maxillo-facial surgery over the past 60 years common infections of the maxilla and face and the incidences and prognosis of their life-threatening complications and reviewed. Fatalities as expected became substantially less frequent after the introduction of antibiotics, but the number of deaths due to septicaemic abscesses in contrast to those due to local complications has fallen only slightly since penicillin usage. The danger of overrating the therapeutic potential of antibiotics is emphasized, and despite major advances in chemotherapy the discrimination between pathologies preferably treated surgically or conservatively has by no means changes.

[Analysis of operative therapy of carcinoma of the tongue (author's transl)].

Analysis of the 139 patients suffering from carcinoma of the tongue treated at the Klinik für Kieferchirurgie der Universität Wien between 1960 and 1970. In comparison with other studies, sex distribution, age distribution, etiological factors were gone into, methods of treatment were described and the results and prognoses indicated. A five year survival rate of 45.1% was found in patients operated on exclusively, which is considered favorable also in comparison with statements in the literature.

Mid-face anthropometry on the cephalometric radiograph in cleft lip and palate cases.

An attempt is made to analyse mid-face deformities objectively in operated cleft lip and palate patients with the help of cephalometric techniques. Mid-face growth of cleft patients after the age of 10 years is compared with growth parameters of non-cleft subjects. This comparison indicates that some of the angles in the nasal area (Subnasale angle, Alaria angle) do not undergo any change in size with increasing age. Others which are subject to change (Rhinion angle, Pronasale angle) show no difference in the extent of growth between cleft patients and normal subjects inspite of different conditions at the age of 10 years. The lateral growth of the nasal soft parts (bialar distance) is largely independent of the lateral growth of the bony structures.

[Treatment of advanced neoplasms in the jaw].

Report is made about the combined therapy with cytostatics (methotrexate - bleomycin) and irradiation in patients with extended tumors in the gnathic region. Ten patients in whom a radical therapy with conventional methods did not promise any success, were treated with intra-arterial infusions of methotrexate and bleomycin and simultaneous irradiation. At present, eight patients are tumor free (observation time 4-14 months after termination of therapy). Although radiation doses and doses of cytostatics were high, only insignificant side effects were stated; consequently, the treatment had to be terminated in none of the patients.
