A point-score system for the differential diagnosis between idiopathic cardiomyopathy and ischemic heart disease.

A point-score system made from sympatoms, electrocardiographic findings, auscultation, and chest X-ray has been presented for the differential diagnosis among congestive cardiomyopathy, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and ischemic heart disease. This system involved a multivariate analysis of 188 cases in which the diagnoses were established by typical echocardiographic findings, invasive examinations or autopsies. The accuracy of diagnosis by this point-score system was 91.5%. This point-score system appears to be useful as a screening test in differentiating idiopathic cardiomyopathy from ischemic heart disease.

5-Di-(2'-tetrahydropyranyl)secalonic acid D as a new antibiotic derivative with anticancer activity.

A pyranyl derivative was chemically synthesized from secalonic acid D, an antibiotic obtained from culture filtrates of Penicillium oxalium, and its anticancer activity towards a highly antigenic rat bladder cancer, BC-47, implanted into inbred ACI/N rat was studied. The anticancer effect of the drug was similar to that of adriamycin. Delayed initiation of treatment, starting 5 days after the cancer implantation, was more effective than treatment starting from day 1. In addition, it was less effective in an immunodeficient host subsequently implanted with BC-47. This compound is thought to retard the cancer cell growth until the appearance of tumor immunity in the host.

A strong correlation between glomerular filtration rate and filtration surface in diabetic kidney hyperfunction.

The direct relationship between glomerular filtration surface and glomerulaf filtration rate was studied in a group of eight short term, young diabetics exhibiting a 50 per cent elevated glomerular filtration rate with a 2-fold variation within the group. A close correlation was obtained between glomerular filtration surface and glomerular filtration rate, r = 0.8. This supports the idea that the increase in glomerular capillary surface may be a main factor in diabetic kidney hyperfunction. The possible long term implications of the functional and morphologic abnormalities are discussed.

HL-A and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.

HL-A antigens were determined in 26 unrelated Japanese patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. Several antigens were more common in patients compared with controls, but statistically significant differences were not evidenced. We also studied two families in which many had a hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. All the affected individuals revealed HL-A-A9 and B7, while none among the unaffected family members had HL-A-B7. Our findings suggest that the HLA-A system may play some role in the pathogenesis of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy with familial occurrence.
