Investigations on the changes of sex ratio in Germany from 1826 up to 1978.

The changes of the secondary sex ratio in Bremen (North Germany) from 1826 up to 1978 are compared with those of Germany in the period from 1872 to 1978. To some extent there are marked differences. The oscillation of the secondary sex ratio in Bremen is more extended in Germany. On the average in Bremen the values are lower in the 19th century than in the 20th. For Germany higher values are observed in the years between 1915 and 1959. The changes of reproductive performance, indicated by birth rate. Supposing that the primary sex ratio is dependent on the time of insemination within the intermenstruum, the same figures of monthly distribution of secondary sex ratio and birth frequency can be expected. In fact, the seasonal variations proved to be not significant and do not show the expected parallel figures.

[Methodologic problems in the measurement of somatometric characteristics].

With respect to difficult research conditions the problems of taking biologically relevant somatometric measurements for the determination of habitus variants are discussed. Under consideration of these difficulties several somatometric characters are selected by comparing the correlations based on the data of two series measured by the authors and three series taken from literature. However, attention is drawn to the fact that no complete characterization of habitus variants will result by means of these few measurements but yet some important relevant criteria.

Gel filtration analysis of vanadium in Ascidia nigra blood cell lysate.

Fractions from a Sephadex gel filtration of homogenized Ascidia nigra blood cell lysate were analyzed for vanadium by atomic absorption spectroscopy. The results were unaffected by temperature from 4-21 degrees C, and by ionic strength in the range 0.09-1.0 M (NaCl). Appreciable loss of vanadium in the supernatant was experienced above pH 2.2. Experiments at pH 2.1 under anaerobic conditions show that the green chromogen and the vanadium-containing bands elute separately. Under these experimental conditions, the vanadium-containing species is of relatively low (congruent to 1,000) molecular weight.

Variabilities in aerosolizing activities and airborne fungal concentrations in a bakery.

Concentrations of airborne culturable fungi were measured in the kitchen of a bakery in Boston, Mass., to evaluate variabilities associated with common worker activities, outdoor aerosol distributions, and season. Activities were categorized as early morning preparation, cornmeal sifting and tossing, flour dumping and mixing, sweeping, and low activity. Sets of measurements were taken over 1 day in spring and 1 day in summer. Fungal concentrations were measured using a one-stage culture plate impactor, and bulk samples were taken from suspected fungal reservoirs within the bakery and subsequently cultured. Compared with the low activity category, elevated levels of total culturable fungi were found during all other activities, with the amount of increase closely related to individual worker activity as well as outdoor concentrations and initial bakery conditions. In the spring, Penicillium was the dominant genus showing activity-related elevations in concentrations, while Cladosporium was the dominant genus during the summer. Clearly, due to variabilities in worker activities and ambient fungal concentrations, a standardized sampling protocol involving a large sample size over multiple days is needed to estimate accurately exposure to either total airborne fungi or specific fungal taxa.
