Significance of unilateral diminished activity in renal scanning.

Renal scanning is an important diagnostic aid in assessing kidney function; the authors have attempted to correlate the results of renal scanning with the findings from intravenous pyelography and the final diagnosis. In non-mass lesions of the kidney the renal scan correlated well with the intravenous pyelogram and the final diagnosis. In mass lesions, a diminished uptake of isotope corresponding to the site of the lesion seen on the intravenous pyelogram was suggestive of a cyst; diminished uptake of isotope in the whole kidney including the mass lesion on the renal scan was suggestive of renal carcinoma. Review of the literature showed only one previous reference to such an observation.

Congenital proximal bulbar stricture in adults.

Congenital proximal bulbar stricture in adults is a definite clinical entity and should be looked for in adults with obscure urinary symptoms. The stricture is usually short and can be demonstrated with a voiding cystogram, urethrogram, and urethroscopy. The condition is thought to be due to incomplete rupture of the cloacal membrane at its junction with the urogenital sinus. The stricture can be treated easily by internal urethrotomy and/or urethral dilatation.

Blind-ending bifid ureter.

Blind-ending bifid ureter is one of the rarest congenital abnormalities of the genitourinary system. It can be symptomatic and can give rise to recurrent urinary tract infection and pain on the affected side. If there is any suspicion of this condition on the intravenous pyelogram, a retrograde ureteropyelogram should be done to demonstrate the blind-ending segment. In symptomatic cases, the condition can be treated successfully by exising the segment.
