Many urologists in North America are increasingly enthusiastic about prostatic cancer screening. Annual digital rectal examination is almost universally endorsed, and prostate-specific antigen testing is favored by most. But doctors really should not screen by either method without patients' informed consent. However, the information required for informed consent is complex and contradictory, difficult for physicians to give and for patients to absorb.
A highly sensitive biological assay for tissue kallikrein is described, using human kininogen as substrate; and quantitation, by radioimmunoassay, of generated kinins. Using purified human urinary kallikrein as a reference standard we have correlated the kininogenase activity of kallikrein with amidase activity as measured by cleavage of the synthetic substrate S2266.
Potential regulators of the renal Kallikrein-Kinin System are poorly defined. We have therefore examined the effect of arginine vasopressin and dopamine on the release of kallikrein and kinin from collagenase-dispersed rat and human renal cortical cells.
Bad breath, halitosis, is an unpleasant problem most people try to avoid. Physicians seem particularly adept at avoiding halitosis by referring patients with this problem to a dentist. However, halitosis may be a symptom of a serious disease. Even if a serious disorder is not present, the cause of bad breath can usually be determined and appropriate therapy given. In this article the causes of halitosis and suggestions for treatment are outlined.

Two cases of malignant disease occurring during immunosuppressive therapy, one a leiomyosarcoma of bowel metastatic to the liver, the other, carcinoma in situ of the cervix uteri, are reported. The possible roles of immunosuppression and immunosuppressive therapy in the pathogenesis of these neoplasms are discussed. It is suggested that the incidence of neoplasms in immunologically suppressed patients is greatly increased and that further investigation into the relation of immunosuppression to cancer is urgently needed.
