A newly developed laparoscopic sonography probe was used for assessment of upper abdominal and retroperitoneal organs. A linear array instrument with a frequency of 7 MHz was used. The cross-sectional width is 3.5 cm and the high frequency permits excellent dissolution. Thus the accepted loss of penetration depth is fully compensated by the possibility of placing the probe directly onto the organs. This method seems to be particularly suitable for detailed assessment of intraabdominal and retroperitoneal organs and of pathological changes. Laparoscopic ultrasonography-directed collection of tissues for histologic evaluation is equally easily done.

Complications after transcutaneous ultrasonically-guided fine-needle aspiration biopsy of the pancreas are exceedingly rare, although published reports mention transitory changes in pancreatic enzymes. Acute necrotising pancreatitis has not previously been reported. It developed in a 40-year-old woman after out-patient fine-needle biopsy because of a space-occupying lesion in the head of the pancreas. Immediate conservative treatment favourably affected the course of the disease, as documented by serial ultrasound and computer tomography. This serious complication suggests that strictest indications for this procedure must be used, together with careful technique of biopsy and strict observation of the patient, if necessary with a brief period of hospitalisation.

EXAFS fluorescence spectra were recorded for high-potential c-type cytochromes which range in oxidation-reduction potential from +145 to +365 mV. No average Fe-ligand bond length differences greater than 0.03 A were observed, for any cytochrome source of oxidation state. Least-squares analysis in combination with model calculations allowed limits to be set on the average Fe-N bond length (1.97-1.99 A) and the Fe-S bond length (2.29-2.32 A). A change of 0.05 A in either the average Fe-N or the Fe-S bond length is readily detectable with the range and quality of the data presented here. Two major conclusions are drawn from this study: In octahedrally coordinated iron porphyrin systems, Fe-N and Fe-S bond lengths are independent of oxidation-reduction potential, and they are also independent of oxidation state. A model for the regulation of oxidation-reduction potential in cytochrome c is proposed.
In the course of the past few years, sonography has become firmly established in clinical practice. The accuracy of the investigations does not only depend on the quality of the equipment used but also to a considerable degree on the standards of investigator training. To reduce the discrepancy between the number and quality of the investigations in the German Federal Republic, the "Kassenärztliche Vereinigung" has released guidelines requiring the users of sonographic equipment to undergo theoretical and practical training. These guidelines are reviewed and commented.
Respiration of washed ejaculated bull spermatozoa with exogenous succinate is drastically increased after a sudden cooling of spermatozoa (cold shock). Loss of intactness of the cellular membrane occurs in a small temperature range between about 16 degrees C and 8 degrees C. A low cooling rate in critical temperature range connected with a sufficient equilibration time at this temperatures strongly restricts the damage of the spermatozoal membrane.

A case report is given of a malignant melanoma of the esophagus and the symptoms of this tumor are reviewed on the basis of 62 cases from the world literature. Males were afflicted 1.7 times as often as females. 85% of all patients were between the ages of 50 and 75. Symptoms, localization, and pattern of metastases are essentially similar to esophageal carcinoma. Melanoma grows like polyps in most cases and does have the typical histological pattern with differing amounts of pigmentation; pigmentation may be difficult to diagnose endoscopically. The esophageal melanoma apparently originate from intraepithelial foci of melanoma cells, which can be found in the neighbourhood of melanomas in macroscopically intact mucosa.

Rare lipomatous lesions are described which were found in a thyroid gland with amyloidosis, in a leiomyoma of the uterus, and in a cicatrix of a myocardial infarction. Semithin and ultrathin sections revealed intracytoplasmatic fat droplets of varying diameter in smooth muscle cells of the uterine myoma as well as in fibroblasts/cytes of the thyroid gland. Regressive changes may be the reason for fat deposition in these cells thus that they cannot be distinguished from original fat cells by means of light microscopy.
