Systemic Pasteurella haemolytica infection as a rare sequel to avirulent live Pasteurella haemolytica vaccination in cattle.
Eleven cases of systemic Pasteurella haemolytica infection in cattle were identified from routine diagnostic laboratory submissions during the falls of 1988, 1989, and 1991. All cases came with a history of recent vaccination with an avirulent live culture P. haemolytica product. Nine of 11 cases involved cattle vaccinated between 2 and 18 days previously with this product. Ten of 11 cases involved 182-227-kg beef calves that were vaccinated between September and November during routine processing for entry into feedlots. The morbidity and mortality was generally low. The major pathologic findings included meningitis, injection site abscessation and/or cellulitis, and polyarthritis. Systemic infection was indicated in all cases by the isolation of P. haemolytica from 2 or more organs or distinct anatomical sites. In 6 cases, the vaccine injection site was cultured, and in all 6 cases, P. haemolytica was isolated. Three separate P. haemolytica isolates from 2 cases were further studied by restriction enzyme analysis (REA). These isolates were from tissues with suppurative inflammation, including the brain, joint, and injection site. The REA patterns of each of these 3 isolates were identical to the REA pattern of the vaccine masterseed, which strongly suggested that the organisms causing systemic infection were the same as the organism used to produce the vaccine. Because the overall incidence was quite low, other factors, such as stress, probably played a major role in the expression of this syndrome.

Automatic counting of nuclear tracks.
Two software packages designed for automatic counting nuclear tracks are tested and compared. The image processing in the first package is divided into three parts segmentation, speckle elimination and removal of ill-formed track holes. The second package is also divided into three parts but the last part is modified such that the track holes with white centres are filled by the program. The processes in the second package are done by the use of mathematical morphology. From the test, it was found that the first package has severe limitations for the working range. The second package provides a greater working range but the running time of the program is longer than that of the first package.

Child abuse and neglect on Oahu, Hawaii: description and analysis of four purported risk factors.
Four factors are commonly considered to indicate "high risk" for child abuse/neglect: (1) low birth weight, (2) young maternal age, (3) mother with single marital status, and (4) low socioeconomic status (SES). These factors were investigated for Oahu, Hawaii, in four separate retrospective studies (using 100 abused cases and 100 controls), to evaluate their usefulness for screening at delivery. Data were obtained from a sample of 2,036 confirmed cases, during the period from 1977 to 1979. Contrary to many studies from mainland United States, low birth weight and single marital status were not associated with increased risk of child abuse/neglect. Single marital status in Hawaii may not be associated with increased risk because it does not have the same social and cultural connotations as it does on the mainland United States. This observation suggests a need to consider regional and cultural variations in investigating and screening for child abuse/neglect.
Human chorionic gonadotrophin and pregnancy-specific beta-1 glycoprotein (SP-1) in ectopic pregnancy.
Human chorionic gonadotrophin (hCG) was estimated by radioreceptor assay (RRA), and beta hCG and pregnancy-specific beta 1 glycoprotein(SP-1) by radioimmunoassay (RIA) in 48 consecutive patients undergoing laparoscopy for suspected ectopic pregnancy. Twenty patients subsequently proven to have ectopic pregnancy had positive results for RIA-beta hCG, but RRA-hCG and SP-1 were negative in 3. Twenty-one nonpregnant patients had negative results for RRA-hCG and RIA-beta hCG, but one had a positive result with SP-1. Seven patients with intrauterine pregnancy had positive results in all 3 assays.
