Sagittal skeletal and dental changes of reverse headgear treatment in Chinese boys with complete unilateral cleft lip and palate.

Cleft lip and palate patients often develop maxillary retrusion after cleft repair. Maxillary protraction treatment during early childhood helps to achieve more favorable occlusion with positive overjet and overbite and allows a more normal growth pattern to occur. The purpose of this study was to investigate the skeletal and dental changes during reverse headgear treatment in a homogeneous group, i.e., Chinese boys born with unilateral complete cleft lip and palate. The results showed that after 7.8 months of reverse headgear wear, normalization of the sagittal maxillomandibular relationship (ANB angle) was achieved. Significant skeletal changes included anterior position of the maxilla and posterior position of the mandible. Dental changes within the respective skeletal units were not significant except for the mandibular molar.

Pelvic inflammatory pseudotumor with central infectious abscess: a case report.

Inflammatory pseudotumors (IPT) are a fascinating group of lesions which involve almost all organs and tissues of the body. The clinical manifestations are diverse. Final diagnosis can only be made by meticulous microscopic examination of different areas of the tumor. A 60 year-old woman had a pelvic IPT with central infectious abscess. The lesion involved her urinary bladder, mesentery, terminal ileum, right rudimentary ovary and the abdominal wall. It mimicked malignant tumor clinically, and led to total surgical excision. Early follow-up has shown a favorable results. IPTs are extremely uncommon. The characteristic pathologic picture is a reparative fibroblastic tissue infiltrated by polymorphic inflammatory cells. Pelvic IPT, admixed with central infectious abscess, is even rarer. Prior pelvic surgery and pasteurella hemolytica infection might be causative factors in this reported case.

[Studies on the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis].

Studies on the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis (As) were reviewed in our institute. Clinico-pathological study showed that coronary As lesions appeared early and took a long-time to seriously stenosis the arterial lumen, resulting in coronary heart disease. Studies on human As lesions by light and electron microscopy suggested that injury to and increased permeability of endothelial cells (EC) and proliferation of smooth muscle cells (SMC), together with an increase of proteoglycans(PG) were important in atherogenesis. Morphologic responses of the aortic wall of normally fed rats to intimal injury by an indwelling catheter (in place for 3 weeks) were studied at the time of removal of the catheter and 4, 8, and 26 weeks later. Neointimal thickening with SMC proliferation and a significant increase in chondroitin sulfate (CS)-PG granule concentrations were found. A study on cultured human EC showed that after EC reached confluence, secretion of heparin sulfate (HS)-PG increased and inhibited the proliferation of SMC. The proliferative ability of cultured human SMC was found to decrease after 8 passages. More lipid accumulation was found in SMC's of the 10th passage (T10) than in those of the 4th passage (T4). T10 SMC showed a higher 35S incorporation into dermatan sulfate (DS) CS-PG than did T4 SMC in both the medium and cell layer. The results suggest that SMC senescence may play an important role in the pathogenesis of As.

Massive osteolysis of the skull: long-term follow-up observations after cranioplasty. Report of two cases.

Two cases of massive osteolysis involving the cranial vault are presented. Unlike disappearing bones in other regions, it is vital to protect the brain from injury by performing cranioplasty once the bone loss has reached a reasonable extent. This appears to be the first report on surgical management in massive osteolysis of the skull. Long term follow-up results are given. The diagnosis and differentiation from related conditions are discussed.

Plasma renin activity and aldosterone determination in patients with pseudotumor cerebri.

A group of 6 women diagnosed as suffering from pseudotumor cerebri had measurement of their plasma renin activity and aldosterone levels at baseline, following plasma volume contraction by furosemide and after dexamethasone therapy. In each instance, the values recorded fell within the normal range and a normal renin-aldosterone axis is postulated.

Subjective and objective visual acuity testing techniques.

The Catford apparatus for determining the objective visual acuity was elevated with 20 normal (20 eyes) and 40 abnormal (75 diseased eyes) patients. The vision of the normal individuals was fogged with neutral-density filters and convex lenses. Eyes with normal or near normal vision showed good correlation between optokinetic response and visual acuity, but no correlation was observed in eyes with poor vision. These findings, which vary from those of Catford, indicate that objective methods of visual acuity testing using a nystagmoid response do not appear useful for general clinical purposes.

Dynamic visual field testing using the Amsler grid patterns.

An economical and time-sparing technique of dynamic visual field testing employing the Amsler grid patterns and the Berens test targets has been developed. This method accurately detected field loss in all 38 patients and all 63 eyes with neurologic defects tested. In a group of 212 glaucomatous eyes, field defects were determined with 97% specificity.
