Synchronization of estrus and ovulation and associated endocrine changes in Bos indicus cows.

The effects of 4 estrus synchronization treatments on intervals to and synchrony of estrus and ovulation, on timing of the preovulatory LH surge and associated changes in plasma progesterone, LH, FSH, and 17beta-estradiol (E(2)) were investigated in 48 Bos indicus cows. Treatment 1 consisted of 2 injections of PGF(2alpha) 14 d apart (n = 12); Treatment 2 of a subcutaneous 3-mg norgestomet implant and an intramuscular injection of 3 mg of norgestomet and 5 mg estradiol valerate, with the implant removed 10 d later (n = 12; norgestomet-estradiol); Treatment 3 of norgestomet-estradiol, with a subcutaneous injection of PMSG given at time of implant removal (Day 10; n = 12); and Treatment 4 of norgestomet implant (as for Treatments 2 and 3) inserted for 10 d, with an intramuscular injection of PGF(2alpha) given at the time of implant removal (n = 12). The experiment was conducted in 2 replicates (24 cows/replicate, 6 cows/group). Estrus, ovulation and timing of the preovulatory surge of LH varied less in cows treated with norgestomet-estradiol and PMSG than in cows in Treatments 1 and 4 (P < 0.008). Treatment with PMSG reduced variation in ovulation times and timing of the LH surge in cows treated with norgestomet-estradiol (P < 0.02). Concentrations of E(2) were higher in cows in Treatments 2 and 3 on the final day of treatment and at about 6 h post ovulation compared with cows in Treatments 1 and 4 (P < 0.05). Different methods for synchronizing estrus did not alter sequential endocrine and behavioral changes in relation to the timing of the LH peak, and the results were consistent with current recommendations for insemination times in Bos taurus cattle.

Social and family factors in adolescent psychiatry.

A retrospective analysis of referrals to a regional adolescent psychiatric service over two years was conducted, focusing on selected social and family variables, to identify areas of potential unmet need and the relationship between these factors and clinical variables. Social and family disadvantage was well represented in our patients, but few were over the age of 17 and fewer from ethnic minority backgrounds. Associations between social, family factors, diagnostic and treatment variables are presented and their implications discussed.

Effects of induction of low plasma progesterone concentrations with a progesterone-releasing intravaginal device on follicular turnover and fertility in cattle.

The effects of concentration of progesterone in plasma on development and fertility of the first wave dominant follicle were studied in cattle. To identify a source of exogenous progesterone that would permit extension of the first wave dominant follicle, nonlactating Holstein cows (n = 6) received on day 8 of two successive oestrous cycles an injection of PGF2 alpha (25 mg) and a new (1.9 g of progesterone (Period 1)) or used (approximately 1.2 g of progesterone (Period 2)) CIDR-B device that was removed on day 17. Control cows (n = 6) received a new CIDR-B device on day 8 that was removed on day 17 and a PGF2 alpha injection (25 mg) on day 17. Ultrasonography and collection of blood samples were performed on alternate days throughout the experiment. Plasma concentrations of progesterone and oestradiol were different between treatments (P < 0.0001 and P < 0.05, respectively). The dominant follicle was maintained until day 17 and ovulated upon removal of the intravaginal device in 1 of 6, 6 of 6 and 0 of 6 in new CIDR-B, used CIDR-B and control groups, respectively (P < 0.01). The preovulatory dominant follicles were 14.2 +/- 1.6 mm, 20 +/- 1.3 mm and 10 +/- 1.3 mm, respectively (P < 0.001) on day 17. There were fewer 5-9 mm follicles in cows having a persistent dominant follicle (P < 0.01). The interval to onset of oestrus was negatively correlated with size of the dominant follicle on day 17 (P < 0.001).(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)
