Air caloric stimulation with tympanic membrane perforation.

Warm air caloric stimulation in an ear with tympanic membrane perforation or mastoidectomy cavity often causes contralateral nystagmus. Secondary nystagmus is common. Our evidence with squirrel monkeys and patients indicates that the primary "inversion" results from endolymph cooling due to evaporative cooling due to evaporative cooling of the mucus lining the middle ear cavity, by the dry air stimulus. Disconjugate horizontal nystagmus was found in a patient with large eardrum perforation, after cold air caloric stimulation. The effect probably resulted from stimulation of the anterior or posterior vertical semicircular canal. Inverted or disconjugate caloric nystagmus after air stimulation is much more frequently due to tympanic membrane perforation, or moisture in the external ear, than to central nervous system disease.

Physical damage caused by sexual deprivation in girls.

In parts of Europe and in the Americas there are still many girls who are prevented by cultural forces from acquiring sexual experience until they are six years or so past puberty. This period of sexual deprivation probably causes physical as well as functional damage. The functional damage was documented by Kinsey more than twenty years ago, but almost no one seems to be aware of it. The physical damage seems likely as the basis for the functional damage and also as the inevitable result of sensory deprivation as revealed by extensive studies of other sensory systems.

Space vestibulo-neuroscience in the new century.

In the new century there will probably be more long spaceflights and fewer short spaceflights. There will probably be several flights to Mars, flights that (if chemical rockets are used) will involve one year to get there, a second year on Mars, and a third year to return. The three-year Mars scenario will probably include rotation of the spacecraft to provide artificial gravity. If nuclear thermal rockets are used, a manned exploration of Mars could be accomplished in less than one year. Vestibular research will be directed towards ensuring that astronauts, upon landing on Mars, will be able to walk with confidence and without delay. Research will be required to investigate vestibular adaptation in spaceflight, motion sickness, and the vestibular effects of rotation in spaceflight.

Semicircular canal fractures in squirrel monkeys resulting from rapid decompression. Interpretation and significance.

A recent histological study of monkeys rapidly decompressed from deep dives has revealed that, in some cases, there are fractures of the bone surrounding the semicircular canals. In some monkeys sacrificed within a few days of their dives, there are full thickness breaks across the bony canal walls. In others, sacrificed several months after a dive, these fractures have become infiltrated by the ectopic growth of new bone which also invades the otic fluid spaces. It now appears that the new bone growth is caused not only by a ripping or irritation of the endosteum, which lines the inside of the bony canals, but also, at least in some cases, by a rupturing of the very hard petrous bone itself. It is difficult to avoid the conclusion that, somehow, large forces are developed within the inner ear or within the petrous bone during decompression.
