In the work of Hauptmann, the "Poet of compassion", the mentally ill, doctors and psychiatric institutions play a special role in the context of social criticism concerning human suffering. The charisma of August Forel and the impressions of atmosphere at the Zurich Burghölzli must already have had a formative effect on Hauptmann in 1888. The Leubus Institution (Silesia), the provincial psychiatric hospital in Stralsund and the psychiatric hospital in Dalldorf/Berlin are further backdrops for Hauptmann's encounters with the psychologically abnormal and his almost characteristic affinity for borderline psychological situations in his books.

[The Flemish author Hendrik Conscience (1812-1883) and the psychiatric patients of Geel].
The Flemish author Hendrik Conscience (1812-1883) whose novels were translated in the 19th century into all European languages, wrote also a mainly unknown, romantically elaborated story which was only translated into French under the title " Eene Gekkenwereld ", in which the system of psychiatric family care plays a leading rôle. After the presentation of a psychopathographic sketch of the personality of Conscience this is followed by a brief information on the contents. In this connection the psychopathologically and social-psychiatrically relevant passages are briefly examined and analysed. The work comes to the conclusion that in the literary field Conscience may be regarded as a pioneer of the humanisation of the early scientific psychiatry to which in the atmosphere of the psychiatric family care in the Flemish place Geel the social-psychiatric element had been already permanently adopted.
[The role of mental health in Greece from the 5th century B.C. to the end of the era].
The article gives a survey of the psychohygienic ideas and conceptions appearing during this period, which were closely connected with a range of philosophical thoughts, by means of contemporary texts. From the epoch of the Greek comedy as reflection of the everyday-life of the Polis, Aristophanes has been quoted. The importance of the Epicurean philosophy and the spiritual guidance throughout the post-Epicurean stoa with its representatives Zenon, Chrysipp, Panaitios, Poseidonios and finally Epiktet, the latter being the most important representative of the fashionable philosophy during the Roman imperial reign, has been emphasised and analysed. The available sources show that eudaimonia, happiness, namely freedom from anxiety, menace and feelings of hatred, and furthermore the surveying of worldly wisdom, the control of one's impulses through Logos and education, harmony to compensate the contrasts, helpfulness towards one's fellow-men as well as the education of the individual to gain inner freedom, represent the most important antique directives of the mind in the sense of a rudimental psychohygiene and psychoprophylaxis.

It was tried to show some decisive and essential points of the psychological analyses contained in the complex work of the philosopher Nietzsche. The extent of his knowledge of man and his changeability constitutes here the field of an understanding, "unmasking" psychology with a sociological-historical touch. The thorough, slow ("lento") study of the original sources on the part of the master of a "connaisseurship of the word" seems to be indispensable for any reader trying to occupy himself with Nietzsche in a work of his own and the questions arising therefrom.
