Pulsed-field gel mapping studies in the vicinity of the fragile site at Xq27.3.

Physical mapping strategies are being employed for an analysis of the fragile X site region. Deletion breakpoints which may be close to the fragile site appear to be at a distance of at least several hundred kb from the nearest DNA probes. Further evidence is found for physical linkage between St14 (DXS52), DX13 (DXS15) and MN12 (DXS33). The data indicate differences in CG content and/or methylation levels between the distal and proximal sides of the fragile site.

Genital herpes. An overview.

Data from the National Disease and Therapeutic Index (NDTI) Survey indicate that the number of physician-patient consultations concerning genital herpes increased 15-fold between 1966 and 1984. Because of the increased incidence of genital herpes, the great variance in symptoms and severity of outbreaks, and the frequent misrepresentation of the nature of herpes simplex, all health-care practitioners should receive up-to-date information on the disorder. This article is intended to educate health-care professionals about genital herpes.

Prevention of pressure sores.

Pressure sores are undesirable. They have physical implications for patients, psychological and social implications for health care staff, relatives and patients, and financial implications for health services. Prevention is relatively simple and totally effective, so why does the incidence of pressure sores remain unacceptably high?

Pressure sores: aetiology, risk factors and assessment scales.

Nurses have traditionally played the key role in preventing pressure sores. Recent thinking, however, suggests that a multidisciplinary approach should be implemented. It is essential that all those involved in pressure sore prevention should possess appropriate knowledge of the aetiology and be aware of the factors that increase the risk of pressure development.

Health and environmental impact assessment in Canada.

Potential health effects of proposed development activities are an important component of environmental impact assessment (EIA). I report results of a survey to determine the nature and extent of health impact assessments in EIA in Canada. Most proponents conduct health impact assessments when there is an identified health concern. However, few Canadian jurisdictions require health impact assessments in their EIA legislation. The extent to which health is considered depends on several factors and concerns can be addressed at several different stages of the EIA process. Health impact assessments have dealt with a wide range of concerns, although the specific health issues addressed depend on the nature of the project. Several procedures and methods have been used by proponents and government reviewers. Often health impact assessments are qualitative or rely on relevant standards or guidelines. Occasionally, quantitative risk assessments are conducted. Survey respondents identified several problems which hinder health impact assessments including a shortage of suitably trained and experienced health professionals, inadequate communications between government agencies and insufficient or conflicting scientific data to allow accurate prediction of any health effects.

Preliminary observations of binaural hearing in an attention-deficit pediatric population.

Brainstem auditory evoked potentials and middle latency auditory evoked potentials were recorded from 21 normal hearing children between 8 and 13 years of age. An age-matched control group of 13 children was used to compare the results of 8 children diagnosed with ADHD. One sample of 2000 averages was collected for right monaural, left monaural, and binaural stimulus presentation conditions. The binaural interaction component was then determined using the formula: [(right monaural+left monaural)--binaural]. Absolute latencies and amplitudes for waves V, N20, P30, and N40 were then compared using descriptive statistics, analysis of variance, and matched t-tests. Percent binaural interaction was also computed for both groups. Significant differences were noted between control and ADHD groups on measures of N40 amplitudes for binaural stimulation, N40 amplitude for the sum of the right and left monaural waveforms, and percent binaural interaction at N40. These results suggest a dysfunction or immaturity in the auditory activity of the thalmo-cortical projections.

Findings of a national survey of acute pain services.

This paper presents the results of a national acute pain survey carried out in 1994. The survey aimed to establish the current status of acute pain management after major surgery in hospitals in the UK and to pinpoint those hospitals with acute pain services. The survey identified that in 1994 recommendations concerning the structure and provision of acute pain services had been partially met in fewer than half the 221 hospitals that responded. The majority of acute pain services consisted of medical and nursing staff; few included psychological or pharmaceutical expertise. The main reason cited for the underdevelopment of services was lack of funding.
