[Interrelationship between pro-oxidant and immunomodulating properties of vitamin D].

It was shown in experiments on mice that 1.25 (OH)2D3 ingested per os in dose 100 ng during 5 days caused the great increasing of lipid peroxidation (LP) in peritoneal macrophages and spleen cells. The evidence of LP induction is the production of TBA-positive substances in these cells. Linear negative dependence was found between increasing of LP and functional activity of lymphocytes which was evidenced by blast transformation of lymphocytes under effect of concanavalin or mitogen of laconose. Linear positive correlation was shown between level of LP and function of macrophages.

Administration, Oral

[Study of immunomodulating properties of beta-carotene in patients].

It was shown that in patients with hypertension, duodenal and gastric ulcers and erosive gastritis leukopenia and lymphopenia are seen. At the same time contents of T- and B-lymphocytes are decreased and contents of C- lymphocytes are increased in circulation blood. Peroral daily intake of 20 mg of beta-carotene during 3-4 weeks caused increasing the contents of B- and T-cells and decreasing contents of C-lymphocytes in blood of patients.

[Effect of the treatment with oxydevit on calcium metabolism, immune status and 1,25(OH)2D3 receptors in the lymphocytes of children with glomerulonephritis].

In all the examined children with chronic glomerulonephritis (GN), peripheral blood lymphocytes had a high concentration of receptors of 1,25 (OH)2D3, a hormonal form of vitamin D. At the same time as to the healthy children, 1,25 (OH)2D3 receptors were identified only in 27%, with the concentration being lower. A large amount of 1,25 (OH)2D3 receptors may be related to the expression of the hormone in activated lymphocytes. In addition to the normalization of calcium metabolism, the treatment with oxydevit favoured the normalization of the content of IgG and T lymphocytes as well as a reduction (to normal) of the content of 0 lymphocytes regardless of the previous treatment. Partial remission was attained in 14 out of 20 GN patients. In 10 of these children, the remission lasting 1-2 years was attained for the first time. In 17 children treated with oxydevit, the incidence of acute respiratory viral infection decreased from 6-8 times to 1-2 times a year. The data obtained allowed one to ascertain the immunomodulatory capacities of oxydevit in children with chronic glomerulonephritis.

B-Lymphocytes

[Lysosome proteinases and protein turnover in the liver, spleen and thymus of rats undergoing antigenic stimulation and fasting].

Antigenic stimulation (AS) inhibited cathepsin A and D activation in the liver induced by fasting. AS after short-term fasting (4 days) induced the activation increase in the most of lysosomal proteinases by 20-80% in the spleen and thymus, while AS of animals, upon 6- and 8-day fasting depressed the activation of all the investigated lysosomal hydrolases (cathepsin A, B, C, D and arylsulphatases A and B) and decreased the total protein half-life. The revealed peculiarities in the lysosomal proteolytic system function and intensified protein turnover in lymphoid organs may reflect the general reaction of the organism, directed towards the maintenance of immunological homeostasis and, in particular, towards antibody production.

Animals

[Immuno-correcting activity of vitamin A in stress].

Experiments on CBA mice have shown that oral vitamin A administration prevents stress-induced immunological disorders: depression of antibody-forming cell production, decrease in natural killer cell activity and T-lymphocyte mitogenic response. Vitamin A also prevents the development of thymus atrophy, lymphopenia and depression of phagocytic activity of peritoneal macrophages.

Animals

[Inhibition of the development of adjuvant arthritis in rats as affected by vitamin E].

The experiments on rats have shown that preliminary oral administration of vitamin E significantly suppressed generalization, but not development of adjuvant-induced arthritis. Oral vitamin E administration beginning one day after the onset of arthritis inhibited the development and generalization of the disease. Vitamin E had no effect on serum lysosomal enzyme activity, but markedly depressed lipid peroxidation.

Animals

[Experimental analysis of the immunostimulant properties of vitamin A].

The experiments on CBA mice and rabbits have shown that vitamin A injection to animals at a daily dose of 3000 and 200000 IU, respectively, stimulates the production of antibody-forming cells and antibodies upon immunization with sheep red blood cells, without affecting the immune response to Vi-antigen. Vitamin A blocks the generation of antigen-specific suppressors, having no effect on concanavalin A-induced suppressors.

[Prevention of the stress-induced decrease in natural killer activity by using a beta-adrenergic blocker and vitamin E].

The data are provided on the efficacy of the use of the beta-adrenoblocker inderal and the natural antioxidant vitamin E as agents that prevent the immobilization stress-induced depression of the activity of natural killers. The problems of the prevention of the action of excess catecholamines and activation of lipid peroxidation as pathogenetic component in the development of stressor depression of the activity of natural killers are discussed.
