Extrusion of eye socket magnetic implant after MR imaging: potential hazard to patient with eye prosthesis.

Metallic implants or prostheses can be potentially hazardous during magnetic resonance (MR) imaging because of movement or dislodgment of the foreign object. Magnetic eye implants have been reported to exhibit strong movement when placed in water and exposed to a field of 1.5 T. The authors report a case of orbital implant extrusion possibly caused by the movement of a magnetic orbital implant during MR imaging at 0.5 T.

A multidisciplinary dental program for community-living adults with chronic mental illness.

Only recently have reports described specialized large-scale dental programs for community-living adults with chronic mental illness. In response to requests from community mental health center case managers, a multidisciplinary team from Central Sydney Area Health Service dentistry, mental health, and transport services joined together to develop a pilot dental program. The aim was to profile the dental needs of community-living clients with chronic mental illness and to improve clients' utilization of inner Sydney public dental services. A review of clients' dental problems and access is presented, together with a description of the pilot program developed by the multidisciplinary team. A profile of the initial dental needs of the participants, and information on the participants' utilization of the pilot dental program is documented. This multidisciplinary approach was successful in developing a program to profile dental needs of clients, and improved the access to public dental services for the majority of clients. There was a subgroup of clients who did not utilize the program, and further follow-up of these clients is needed. This multidisciplinary approach could be useful in the development and funding of other special care dental programs.

In utero hematopoietic stem cell transplantation: a caprine model for prenatal therapy in inherited metabolic diseases.

OBJECTIVES: We explored the feasibility and efficacy of in utero hematopoietic stem cell transplantation in the caprine animal model system with the objectives of determining procedures for transplantation and establishing methods for detecting engraftment. METHODS: Male fetal liver hematopoietic stem cells were injected into female fetuses during the immunotolerant period, using either hysterotomy or ultrasound-guided injections. RESULTS: The rate of fetal death was much lower for the ultrasound-guided injections. Donor cells were observed in the peritoneal fluid of 4 fetuses 3 days after injection, but no donor cells were detected in tissues at longer time periods. CONCLUSIONS: Ultrasound-guided injection of hematopoietic stem cells into the abdomen of a developing fetus is safe and feasible. The parameters required for successful engraftment have not yet been identified.

Optic nerve sarcoidosis: MR findings.

Neurologic involvement has been described in 5% of patients with sarcoidosis; however, direct granulomatous involvement limited to the optic nerve but not involving the chiasm is rare. We describe two patients with biopsy-proven sarcoidosis; the fat-suppressed gadolinium-enhanced MR findings showed sarcoid involvement limited to the optic nerves.
