The effect of long term intraportal infusion of insulin on liver regeneration has been studied in rats 24, 36 and 48 hrs after partial hepatectomy. Our studies showed an enhancement by insulin of some parameters of rat liver regeneration, i.e. a rapid increase of the DNA and RNA levels as well as the TTK activity in the whole liver homogenate and all the subcellular fractions examined. The influence of insulin was marked during the whole time of experiment, but the most significant changes occur during the first 24 hrs after partial hepatectomy.
A 47-year-old man is reported who had an extensive arteriovenous angioma of the spinal cord confirmed during operation. The patient had an atypical symptom complex, with clinically evident deep flaccid paresis of lower extremities without pyramidal signs, sensory disturbances and sphincter disturbances. The anomaly causing a steal mechanism led to ischaemia of the anterior horns of the cord.

The principles of energy metabolism in human organism during physical exercise of varying intensity are described calling attention to the effect of exercise duration on mobilization of energy reserves in fatty acids. The particular role of carnitine in the metabolism of long-chain fatty acids is discussed pointing to its content in natural diet and to the possibilities of its supplementation.

The natural history of ALS was analysed in a group of 132 cases. Three clinical types were isolated: typical (78% of cases), bulbar (14%) and polyneuropathic (8%). The typical and polyneuropathic types were more frequent in males, while females prevailed in the bulbar type. In most cases the onset was in the fifth decade of life and death occurred within three years. In 11% of cases the disease extended over many years despite presence of bulbar involvement. No familial occurrence of the disease was observed, although this has been reported in the literature. No cases were noted of the ALS-parkinsonism-dementia syndrome.

During the years 1968-1988 270 patients with tumors and mediastinal cysts were treated surgically. In 48 (17.8%) cysts were found (26 males, 22 females, age ranged 10-63 years, mean 40.1 years). In 24 pericardial cysts were found. In 24 the cysts derived from the forgut. 23 subjects (47.9%) were symptomless. In all the cysts were removed. Mortality was not seen. 47 patients are included in long-term observation.
Human ApoE is a plasma and cerebrospinal fluid protein that serves as a ligand for low density lipoprotein receptors and, through its interaction with these receptors, appears to be involved in the transport of cholesterol and other lipids among the nervous cells. ApoE is synthesized by astrocytes in brain and by macrophages in peripheral nerves during the repair response to tissue injury and regeneration. In the nervous system ApoE may also be involved in processes unrelated to lipid transport, the processes that were completely unsuspected until very recently and have led to the link between ApoE and the neurodegenerative disorder--Alzheimer's disease. The lipoprotein has been found in association with cerebral amyloid deposits and the presence of the epsilon 4 allele constitutes a major genetic risk factor for Alzheimer's disease but does not influence the rate of cognitive decline. It has been shown that ApoE4 promotes fibrillogenesis in vivo and in vitro from amyloid beta peptide and ApoE3 binds to tau protein slowing the initial rate of its phosphorylation and self-assembling into paired helical filaments. This review summarizes the data leading to this conclusion and discusses possible mechanisms: of ApoE involvement based on recent biochemical studies. The clinical application of ApoE level estimation in cerebrospinal fluid and phenotyping is presented.
