Neuropsychic factors in physical urticaria.

Psychosomatic investigations were made in 18 patients with dermographism, 17 with cold urticaria, and 13 with cholinergic urticaria, and 13 with cholinergic urticaria. The Maudsley Personality Inventory was used and electroencephalograms were recorded from most patients. In the majority of cases of dermographism first symptoms coincided with frustrating situations and psychic stress-intensified manifestations. 81.8% of the patients with dermographism had abnormal electroencephalograms. In cold urticaria the role of psychic factors could not be demonstrated, whereas in cholinergic urticaria 'brief' emotions provoked symptoms in three-quarters of the patients, although no other signs of the role of psychic factors were detected,

The role of psychic factors in patients with allergic rhinitis.

Psychosomatic studies were made in 128 patients with allergic rhinitis. After the allergic and clinical anamnesis the patients were divided into two groups: those ill with hay fever (91 patients) and those suffering from perennial allergic rhinitis (37 patients). The assessment of the role of psychogenous factors in both varieties of allergic rhinitis was the main purpose of the investigation. The investigation showed that psychogenous factors are practically of no importance in hay fevers. Their role is great, however, when perennial allergic rhinitis is involved.

Acupuncture and phonostimulation in pollenosis and vasomotor rhinitis in the light of psychosomatic investigations.

Patients with vasomotor rhinitis (28) and pollenosis (23) were subjected to psychosomatic examination and treated either by acupuncture or phonostimulation exclusively. Acupuncture was performed after the classical method in 22 patients and phonostimulation in 29. Evaluation of the results was based on laryngological examinations and appraisals entered by the patients in special personal diaries. In pollenosis the condition was unchanged by the treatment. In vasomotor rhinitis, on the other hand, in which psychic factors were of importance, some of the patients usually improved temporarily at the beginning of treatment, whereas a few suffered exacerbation. These effects may be attributable to suggestion.
