Six blood samples were taken from each of 33 healthy young men during the course of 2 weeks. From these, the testosterone, dihydrotestosterone, and oestradiol levels were determined. In addition, free testosterone was measured using saliva samples obtained from 23 of the subjects. Both coefficients of variation and variance analyses showed that the inter-individual variability is greater than the intra-individual for all of the hormones. No influence of the day of the week could be ascertained. However, it was discovered that the serum hormone levels dropped with age (weakly significant for oestradiol, insignificant for the androgens) in spite of the subjects being in or near their third decade. The pooled intra-individual correlations between the hormones all fell within the moderate to middle-high positive domain, whereas the inter-individual correlations ranged between highly positive (testosterone to dihydrotestosterone), middle highly positive (free testosterone to total testosterone), and slightly negative (free testosterone to oestradiol).
Correlations between sex hormone levels and body dimensions--so far investigated only in Caucasian populations--were analysed using data from 114 !Kung San hunter-gatherers and 137 urban and rural Kavango men from Namibia. The androgens testosterone (Tser) and 5 alpha-dihydrotestosterone (DHT) in the serum and free testosterone in the saliva (Tsal) as well as oestradiol (E2) in the serum were determined by the radioimmunoassay method. The body dimensions were described by 50 anthropometric features which were additionally subjected to factor analysis yielding seven factors. Most of the individual measurements as well as the resulting factor scores correlated significantly with the sex hormone variables and the hormone ratios Tser/DHT, Tsal/Tser, and Tser/E2 in the !Kung San and the two Kavango samples. For an extended comparison pertinent data from a German sample were included in the analysis. This made it possible to test the stability of metric hormonal correlations in different populations living under various ecological and economical conditions. While the breadth measurements in all samples show relatively consistent correlations to both absolute hormones and hormone ratios, the correlations to the other body measurements and individual factor scores turn out to be less stable. Here, the effect of sex hormones on physical growth, which is experimentally well documented, is obviously differentially covered by genetic and environmental factors specific for the groups in question.

OBJECTIVE: To define the relation between mood, anxiety, puerperal-depression and autoimmune-thyroid-disfunction. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We screened 292 mothers 2 to 3 days after delivery for anxiety, depression and mood disturbances as well as thyroid-function and microsomal antithyroid-antibody status. Ten autoantibody positive woman were compared with an equal number of age-matched controls. The state-trait-anxiety inventory which consists of 20 questions concerning state-anxiety (anxiety in a given situation) and 20 questions concerning trait-anxiety (anxiety as a quality of personality) was used to describe anxiety. The Beck-depression-inventory was applied to measure depressive illness. To assess the mood we used the "Giessener Beschwerdebogen". RESULTS: We found subclinical hypothyroidism in 40% of the antibody positive women and their matched pairs. Another 10% of these 20 women showed clinical hypothyroidism. There was no significant association of thyroid-function or disfunction with neither anxiety nor depressive illness or mood disturbance. The incidence of state-anxiety was significantly higher in the antibody positive group than in the antibody negative group (Chi2 = 3,3; P < 0.04). Trait-anxiety showed a tendency to be higher in the antibody positive group, but the difference was not significant (Chi2 = 2; P < 0,08). The frequency of depressive illness or mood disturbance at the time of assessment was not significantly different in thyroid-antibody positive group compared with antibody negative group. CONCLUSION: Autoantibody induced thyroiditis may contribute to anxiety in the postpartum period.
