Immunodiagnosis of Bancroftian filariasis by enzyme linked immunosorbent assay using Litomosoides carinii and Setaria cervi antigens.

An ELISA was developed using cross-reacting antigens of Litomosoides carinii and Setaria cervi to detect antibodies in filarial patients. The diagnostic potential of the test was investigated in 80 symptomatic cases of filariasis, 40 asymptomatic carriers and 50 normal subjects of an area around Lucknow endemic for Bancroftian filariasis. By the criteria laid down for ELISA positivity for filariasis, 86.2% of the symptomatic cases could be detected by this test. Only four of 40 asymptomatic carriers and one of 50 normal subjects gave a positive ELISA response. Purified antigenic fractions of S. cervi are also promising for detecting asymptomatic carriers.

Pleural plaques in asbestosis: effect of Candida albicans.

Effect of chrysotile dust alone or together with Candida albicans administered intratracheally in guinea pigs was studied in the genesis of pleural plaques over a period of 12 months. A significant increase of mucopolysaccharides, phosphorus, calcium and -SH content was detected in pleural fluid of animals treated with chrysotile and Candida albicans together than in those treated with chrysotile or Candida albicans alone. The results suggest that an infection of Candida albicans accentuates the effect of chrysotile by altering the biochemical parameters preceding to the formation of pleural plaques.

Diagnostic potentialities of enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay in tuberculosis using purified tuberculin antigen.

Delayed hypersensitivity tests with tuberculin or purified tuberculin (PPD) have been used for detection of tuberculous infection. The present paper describes an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for detection of PPD-antibodies in tuberculosis patients. The ELISA test was positive in nearly 80% of cases having bacteriological evidence of tuberculosis. The test could also detect PPD-antibodies in 66% of the cases not showing bacteriological evidence of tuberculosis. The potentiality of the test in the immunodiagnosis of tuberculosis is discussed.

Changes in lysosomal enzymes of peritoneal exudate cells in albino rats and Mastomys natalensis during Plasmodium berghei infection.

Activities of certain lysosomal enzymes of peritoneal exudate cells were followed during Plasmodium berghei infection in two experimental hosts. In albino rats, where sterile immunity against the infection develops, levels of beta-D-glucuroniodase and acid phosphatase activities were increased several times the normal values. On the other hand, in Mastomys natalensis, which succumbs to infection, levels of both the enzymes decreased considerably. Cathepsin D activity did not change to a significant extent in either host.
