Some effects of bone meal and NaF tablets on the composition of saliva.

Whole saliva was collected from dental students while: 1) chewing paraffin, 2) sucking bone meal tablets, and 3) sucking NaF tablets. Initial pH, content of ionized and total calcium and content of fluoride in saliva were measured. As compared to paraffin stimulated saliva, the sucking of bone meal tablets caused a decrease in salivary pH, ionized calcium and fluoride. Sucking NaF tablets caused a fall in initial pH and an increase in total calcium, while the amount of ionized calcium remained unchanged. The content of fluoride was high in saliva during sucking of NaF tablets.

Oral aspects of osteopetrosis.

The characteristic feature of osteopetrosis is a lack of osteoclastic activity, leading to a series of somatic problems for afflicted persons. The life span of osteopetrotic patients has increased in recent years, thereby making oral aspects of the disease more evident. Four children with malignant osteopetrosis, born between 1967 and 1975, were examined. In all patients the anterior teeth were of normal shape, and erupted on schedule. Primary molars and all permanent teeth were greatly distorted, and remained totally or partly embedded in basal bone. Vertical growth of alveolar ridge was very limited. Where a fenestration of overlaying mucosa had occurred, a localized progressive osteitis developed, leading to soft tissue inflammation and, in two cases, extraoral mandibular fistulas. Peridontal attachment was very poor, spontaneous exfoliation had occurred in all patients. In two children tooth germs and necrotic bone were surgically removed. No beneficial effect of the treatment was observed. Large doses of antibiotics were needed to control recurring infections. No means of curing progressive osseous destruction of mandibular bone has been found. The general prognosis is poor.

Dental findings in patients with Aarskog syndrome.

Dental manifestations of the Aarskog syndrome were studied in 10 individuals. There was retarded development and eruption of the permanent teeth in six boys. Dental age was less retarded than height age and bone age. The prevalence of hypodontia and the prevalence and degree of orthodontic anomalies were higher than in the general population. Caries prevalence was high.

The calcium selective electrode--a possible tool in dental research.

Ion selective potentiometry is widely used for analytical purposes in biologic research. The Ca selective electrode offers an inexpensive and easily handled means for studying ionized calcium. It does not affect the process studied, and may, for example, combined with an automatic recorder, give running information on dynamic systems. The calcium electrode responds in accordance with the Nernst equation and has a theoretical range of 1--10(-6) M Ca2+. The electrode is influenced by changes in temperature, in pH and also in concentration of buffer solution. The Ca sensitive membrane is adversely affected by acetic acid but tolerates lactate/lactic acid buffers. Best linearity in calibration curves for Ca2+ in lactate buffers is found in concentrations from 10(-4) M to 10(-2) M Ca. In a 5% Na lactate/lactic acid buffer, pH 5, with 0.5 M KNO3 as an ionic strength adjuster, a straight calibration curve, Nernstian slope factor 27 mV/decade, is found from 10(-4) to 1 M Ca.
