Occurrence of oral sebaceous glands in 43,654 industrial workers of Gujarat, India.

In 10 cancer patients platelet concentration, platelet consumption, platelet half-life time and plasma concentration of platelet factor 4 were determined. A high frequency of thrombocytosis and increased platelet consumption were observed, and the plasma concentration of platelet factor 4 was increased. However, no significant correlation was found between platelet consumption and the result of a single determination of platelet factor 4 concentrations in plasma.

Antigenic differences in human sperm samples related to various morphological abnormalities.

Sperm samples were collected from male partners of fertile and infertile couples having unexplained and male factor infertility and analyzed for morphological abnormalities. After a staining procedure, sperm samples of these infertile men showed a variety of abnormalities. The sperm samples were also studied for their binding with the Abs directed against protamine (the nuclear protein), fertilization antigen (FA-1, sperm surface antigen), and the lithium diiodosalicylate- (LIS-) solubilized sperm preparation, and the binding was correlated with the percentage of morphologically abnormal sperm in the sample. Abs used in the present study were raised in female rabbits and had high titers (ELISA titers, 1:4096 to 1:8196), and recognized no band (anti-protamine), one 49,000- +/- 2000-dalton band (anti-FA-1), and at least 8 bands of various molecular identities in the 14,000- to 92,000-dalton range (anti-LIS sperm) on the Western blot of LIS-solubilized human sperm. The affinity-purified Fab' antibodies were iodinated and used in a radioimmunobindingassay for testing their binding with the sperm cells. Anti-protamine Fab's showed minimal binding and the binding activity (cpm bound/10 x 10(6) sperm cells) did not correlate (head defect, r = .12; midpiece defect, r = .07; tail defect, r = .11) significantly with percentage of abnormal cells in the sample. The binding of the anti-FA-1 Fab's also did not show a significant correlation (head defect, r = .29; midpiece defect, r = .48; tail defect, r = .23), though a positive trend (p = .05) was observed with the midpiece defect. In contrast, the binding of anti-LIS sperm Fab's demonstrated a significant correlation with the percentage of abnormal sperm cells in the sample (head defect, r = .51, p = .04; midpiece defect, r = .80, p less than .0001; tail defect, r = .23, p = .039). With an increased percentage of abnormal sperm cells, especially those with midpiece defect, there was an increased binding of anti-LIS sperm Fab's. These results suggest that with an increase in percentage of abnormal sperm, there is a change in antigenicity of the sperm cells. An increase in structural abnormality may enhance antibody binding to an abnormal sperm cell, thus causing a further decrease in its fertilizing capacity.

Comparison of impact strength of acrylic resin reinforced with kevlar and polyethylene fibres.

The present study was done to evaluate the impact strengths of heat-activated acrylic resins reinforced with Kevlar fibres, polyethylene fibres and unreinforced heat activated acrylic resin. Each of three groups had 25 specimens. Brass rods of uniform length of 40 mm and diameter of 8 mm were used to prepare the moulds. A combination of long fibres (40 mm length) and short fibres (6 mm length) were used. The total amount of fibres incorporated was limited to 2% by weight of the resin matrix. Short and long fibres of equal weight were incorporated. The short fibres were mixed with polymer and monomer and packed into the mould, while, the long axis of the specimen, perpendicular to the applied force. The specimens were then processed. Impact strength testing was done on Hounsfield's impact testing machine. Kevlar fibre reinforced heat activated acrylic resin specimens recorded higher mean impact strength of 0.8464 Joules, while polyethylene fibres reinforced heat activated acrylic resin recorded mean impact strength of 0.7596 joules. The unreinforced heat activated acrylic resin recorded mean impact strength of 0.3440 Joules.

Cytologic, histologic and clinical correlations of precancerous and cancerous oral lesions in 57,518 industrial workers of Gujarat, India.

A group of 57,518 industrial workers of Gujarat, India were screened for oral cancerous and precancerous oral lesions between 1967 and 1971. All subjects were 35 years of age or older and 95 per cent were males. The 27,841 oral lesions found were examined by cytologic scrapings and 13,230 were biopsied. Also, all lesions were followed clinically to assure a malignancy was not overlooked. There were 51 oral cancers diagnosed (.18% of the lesions and .09% of the entire study group). Computing all the cytologic smears, there was an overall accuracy exceeding 99 per cent. When assessing just the malignancies, the accuracy decreased to 80.4 per cent. Since there was a high degree of clinical suspicion on the part of the screeners, only one unsuspected cancer was discovered by cytology. There were four false positive interpretations; and 53 other specimens classified as "suspicious" subsequently were shown to be benign. Although exfoliative cytology has proved useful in assessing oral lesions as an adjunct to biopsy, the low frequency of oral cancer limits the value of this technique as a screening modality. Most false negatives have been associated with leukoplakic (hyperkeratotic) lesions. Therefore, in a persistent oral lesion, even though a cytologic scraping may not be suspicious or characteristic of malignancy, a biopsy should still be strongly considered.

An evaluation of closest speaking space using various sibilants amongst age groups of both sexes.

Closest speaking space plays a crucial role in the success of complete denture prosthesis. For proper phonetics, esthetic and comfort there should be minimum amount of separation between the incisal edges of upper and lower anterior teeth during speech. The present study shows that there is no significant variation in closest speaking space amongst different age groups of both sexes and between sibilants. However, there is a significant difference in closest speaking space amongst individuals.

Oral lesions in relation to prosthetics. A review.

The oral mucosa is not designed to provide a foundation for denture base and is called upon to function in a new environment. Although dentures are fabricated for the purpose of improving health and well being of the patient, they may occasionally become injurious to oral tissues. Dentures are worn because of their essential role in appearance, in speech and mastication far outweighs their potential for damage. A thorough knowledge of the histologic features of the structures that support dentures is necessary for proper denture service. Various pathologic lesions that can occur following use of dentures are reviewed in this article.
