Supratentorial haemangioblastoma. Case report.

A case of supratentorial haemangioblastoma is presented. Diagnostic examinations, including computerized axial tomography, were not accurate. Histological examination of the removed tissue disclosed the correct diagnosis. Supratentorial haemangioblastomas are very rare tumours. We describe a case with regard to preoperative neuroradiological investigations, computerized axial tomography, and final histological diagnosis.

Inability of accumulated metabolic byproducts of uremia to alter the extent of warfarin binding in charcoal treated plasma.

The addition to charcoal treated normal and charcoal treated uremic plasma of four metabolites which accumulate during uremia--uric acid, beta -phenylpyruvic acid, guanidinosuccinic acid, and p-hydroxyphenylacetic acid--failed to produce a warfarin binding defect. Charcoal treatment corrected the warfarin binding defect in uremic plasma, however it diminished the extent of warfarin binding to normal plasma. These observations rule out the possibility that uric acid, beta -phenylpyruvic acid, guanidinosuccinic acid, or p-hydroxyphenylacetic acid contribute to the warfarin binding defect in uremia, and suggest that free fatty acids have no role in the warfarin binding defect.

[Duodenal duplication. Case report and review of the literature].

A case of duodenal duplication (cyst) in a 42-year-old male is reported. The late manifestation of this rare, little-known, but noteworthy congenital malformation was characterized by repeated attacks of acute pancreatitis and development of a high, duodenal obstruction. Radiographic examination and fiberoptic endoscopy was followed by exploratory laparotomy which demonstrated the accurate diagnosis. A review of the literature including 39 duodenal duplications in more than 300 duplications of the alimentary tract is presented.

[Radiotelemetry of cardiovascular response on a fitness trail (author's transl)].

Continuous radiotelemetry of direct arterial blood pressure and heart rate was performed in eight healthy subjects (seven men, one woman; average age 26 years) on a fitness trail. The results demonstrate that such running represents a maximal effort, at 192/min heart rate (age-related maximum). The heart rate remained constant whether on largely dynamic exercise during running or on largely static effort during gymnastic exercise. During running, blood pressure rose up to 151/79 mm Hg, while gymnastic exercise gave mean values of up to 200/130 mm Hg as a result of sustained muscle contractions and forced breathing. Such uncontrolled maximal effort may be unexpectedly dangerous to persons with cardiovascular disease and fitness trails should not be recommended in the rehabilitation of cardiac patients.

Influence of renal dysfunction on warfarin plasma protein binding.

The in vitro plasma protein binding of warfarin was evaluated by ultrafiltration in plasma from seven normal subjects and seven patients with varying degrees of renal dysfunction. The unbound, or free, warfarin fraction was twice as high in the plasma samples withdrawn from patients with renal impairment than in the samples obtained from normal volunteers. Furthermore, there was a positive correlation between the extent of renal dysfunction and the magnitude of the free warfarin fraction when either creatinine clearance, plasma creatinine, or BUN was used to estimate renal function.

An A + T-rich satelitte DNA in a monocotyledonous plant, Cymbidium.

The DNA of aseptically grown protocorms of a Cymbidium hybrid and in vitro developed leaves, as well as DNA of leaves and flower buds of Cymbidium ceres from the greenhouse, was analysed by analytical ultracentrifugation and thermal denaturation. Upon ultracentrifugation a satellite DNA with a buoyant density of 1.682 g/cm-3 appears as a shoulder on the main band (density 1.694 g/cm-3). Thermal denaturation reveals an inhomogeneous main peak with the major component melting at 84 degrees C and a separate peak melting at 75 degrees C. This is the first demonstration of a satellite DNA in a monocot, and one of the rare examples of a major A + T-rich DNA fraction in a plant.

Comparative cytochemical measurements in the diploid-tetraploid species pair of hylid frogs Hyla chrysoscelis and H. versicolor.

Hyla versicolor (2n = 48) is a tetraploid counterpart to H. chrysoscelis (2n = 24). Cytochemical measurements revealed that no cytological parameter of the two species conformed to the expected 2:1 ratio. Every cytological factor of the tetraploid appeared to have been regulated toward the diploid level. H. veriscolor-to-H. chrysoscelis mean ratios and their standard errors were: DNA 1.90 +/- 0.03; nuclear histone, 1.70 +/- 0.18; nuclear RNA, 1.63 +/- 0.19; total nuclear protein, 1.46 +/- 0.05; nuclear sizes, 1.42 +/- 0.08.
