Clinical study of niceritrol on serum lipids in the treatment of hyperlipidemia.

The effects of niceritrol, a nicotinic acid derivative, on the levels of HDL-cholesterol (HDL-Ch) and a mixture of VLDL- and LDL-Ch (VLDL- + LDL-Ch) were studied in hyperlipidemic patients. Serum total cholesterol (sTC) and serum triglyceride (sTG) were significantly reduced during niceritrol administration. Lipoprotein electrophoresis showed that niceritrol increased the alpha:beta ratio. HDL-Ch showed a significant increase of 12.5% by the 16th week of therapy. This increase was more marked in patients with lower pre-treatment HDL-Ch levels and significant in patients whose pre-treatment sTG levels were in excess of 200 mg/dl. Females displayed higher pre-treatment HDL-Ch levels (38.5 mg/dl) than males (30.6 mg/dl). However, niceritrol increased HDL-Ch significantly in both groups. At 16 weeks, the VLDL- + LDL-Ch level showed a significant decrease of 9.2%; the HDL-Ch:VLDL + LDL-Ch and HDL-CH:sTC ratios were significantly increased throughout niceritrol administration. Niceritrol is thought to be effective in preventing the development and progression of atherosclerosis because it raises the level of anti-atherogenic HDL-Ch and lowers the level of atherogenic VLDL- + LDL-Ch.

Differences between surface antigenic determinants of polar monotrichous flagella of Vibrio parahaemolyticus and of related species.

Polar monotrichous flagella (M-flagella) of Vibrio parahaemolyticus have antigens in common with those of various species of Vibrio including V. cholerae and V. anguillarum, and of Beneckea, revealed by gel diffusion tests with flagelli monomers. However, antiserum against M-flagellin of V. parahaemolyticus did not agglutinate cells of V. cholerae and V. anguillarum, although it did agglutinate cells of V. parahaemolyticus. Agglutination tests after absorption of the antiserum with purified M-flagellar filaments or flagellin monomers and H-agglutination inhibition tests demonstrated that there are two different antigenic determinants in M-flagella as in lateral flagella. One is on the surface of the M-flagella (surface antigenic determinant, SA) and disappears or is buried in dissociated monomers. The other is inside the flagella (internal antigenic determinant, IA) and is exposed when the flagella are dissociated to flagellin monomers. SA of V. parahaemolyticus is different from those of V. cholerae and V. anguillarum, whereas the three species have a common IA.

[Heterogeneity of bucco-facial apraxia].

The authors have studied the bucco-facial apraxia (BFA) in 20 aphasic patients, examining 10 isolated oral gesture (IOG) and 10 combined oral gesture (COG). The heterogeneity of the BFA is indicated by the qualitative analysis of the types of errors in COG in relation to IOG. It is probably that the BFA due to the posterior lesions might base on the motor programming disorders of oral gestures, and that the BFA due to the anterior lesions on the motor realization disorders of oral gestures. It remains unsolved whether there is a continuity or some varieties between two types of BFA.
