Diagnosis and therapy of the subinvolution of placental sites in the bitch.

Within the last 19 years, 20 cases of placentitis post partum have been studied at the clinic. On 14 occasions the condition took the form of excessive uterine bleeding (metrorrhagia) post partum and, on five occasions, of prolonged vaginal discharge lasting 8-13 weeks post partum. One bitch with a clinically undetectable form of this disorder was diagnosed at ovariohysterectomy. The average age of the bitches was 4.5 years (range 2-6 years). Examinations included abdominal palpation, vaginoscopy, vaginal smear examination and, if necessary, radiography and ultrasonography. The presence of decidua-like cells in the smear was confirmed as evidence of abnormal uterine involution. Six dogs were subjected to ovariohysterectomy; histological examination revealed inflamed and degenerated areas of the uterine surface. Decidualike cells were seen for up to 10 weeks post partum. Fourteen bitches were treated successfully with an injection of the progestagen Niagestin (25-50 mg per bitch) and both intrauterine and parenteral antibiotics were administered. The discharge stopped within a few days in all dogs treated. A subsequent normal pregnancy occurred in four cases.

[Indirect detection of ovulation and fertilization in the dog by progesterone level testing].

In addition to already published data (Arbeiter et al., 1990) we could achieve important facts concerning the estimation of mating time of the bitch by measuring the progesterone (P4) level continuously and observing the clinical signs on a collective of 106 ambulant patients. We found that a P4-concentration of 5 ng/ml plasma and above is signaling ovulation or ova fertilisation; a sudden rise of the progesterone over 10 ng (Ovucheck), reflecting 19.2 ng/ml (Serozyme-Progesterone), turned out to be a diagnostic mark for determination of mating time. Copulation took place between the 9th and 19th day of heat. 89% of the controllable bitches (n = 79) conceive and birth occurred 61.4 days (mean) later. The litter size and the loss of dead born puppies (4.7%) was normal with regard to the pertinent races. Because of their easy handling the P4-test kits (Ovucheck; Serozyme-Progesterone) are of good use for the practitioner.

[Ovarian cysts in cattle--etiology, therapy success, fertility].

The functions of the ovaries were controlled in 92 cattle over a period of 12 to 95 days p.p. Cystic follicles developed in 61% (25 from 41) during reconvalescence period and were correlated with a 4.2 days earlier onset of ovarian function, which was assured statistically. All together in 41 animals cystic degeneration was registered. Cysts having appeared before day 39 p.p. receded spontaneously in 24%, those having developed later remained. By application of the GnRH-analogous Buserelin (Receptal), either exclusive or combined with beta-carotene or Prostaglandin Trometamol-Tiaprost (Iliren) ovarian function could be restored in all cases. Restitution was most rapid when using Buserelin plus beta-carotene (Fertilizing insemination 3 weeks post application), but protracted after the consecutive method of therapy. All 92 cattle became pregnant. The P4-level of all "cyst-cows" were low, i.e. between 0.68 and 0.81 ng/ml of skimmed milk. The increase of conductivity of the cervical mucus to above 30 Ohm turned out an evidence of an ovarian cyst to be present. Restoration took longer in correlation with the increasing diameter of the cysts.

Effects on pseudopregnancy, pregnancy and interoestrous intervals of pharmacological suppression of prolactin secretion in female dogs and cats.

Cabergoline, a new ergoline derivative, is a potent prolactin inhibitor. In this review, results are combined from previously published and unpublished blind laboratory and open clinical studies with cabergoline in pseudopregnant, pregnant and lactating bitches, in bitches with normal and prolonged cycles, and in pregnant queens. Dose-response studies in nursing bitches, using puppy weight as an endpoint, revealed that a dose of 5 micrograms/kg/day orally (for 5 days) was the optimal dose with a minimum of side effects. This dose effectively lowered blood prolactin concentrations in pregnant bitches and was partly luteolytic during the 1st half of gestation, and fully luteolytic during the 2nd half of gestation. Consequently, pregnancies were terminated in the 2nd half of pregnancy in the bitch, and in the queen. Treatment successes with pseudopregnancy and true and false lactation, including cases of eclampsia, were greater than 90%. The same level of success was seen in bitches with prolonged cycles (anoestrus). A 7-10-day treatment period resulted almost uniformly in oestrus, and restored fertility in greater than 80% of all bitches mated. Cycles were occasionally shortened in bitches treated for false lactation. Attempts to shorten cycles routinely in beagle bitches, in a commercial breeding operation, with a dose of 5 micrograms/kg/day for 14 days during months 4, 5 or 6 of the cycle were unsuccessful.

[Diseases of the prostate in the dog].

BPH (benign prostatic hyperplasia) is frequently observed in male dogs older than five years. Uncomplicated BPH is therefore regarded as a normal aging process. Only 1-2% of the males develop malign tumors, furthermore acute or chronic prostatitis, abscesses or cysts. The diagnosis of prostatic diseases requires special physical and laboratory examinations. For the treatment hormonal effective substances, antibiotics, antiphlogistics, analgesics and surgical procedures (prostatectomy, castration) are recommended. The author successfully uses a therapy in two phases starting with an intensive medication (Tardack plus antibiotics s.c./p.o. and local) for at least 10, up to 30 days, followed by surgery. Particularities in diagnosis and therapy are pointed out.
