On 811 pregnant subjects, a sampling that included high-risk pregnancies, NST was performed 3,015 times from 24 to 42 weeks' gestation. Reactive NST and nonreactive NST accounted for 67.9% and 26.1%, respectively. Both amplitude and duration of acceleration showed an increase with the advance of pregnancy. The number of accelerations which occurred in the examination period increased as well. V-shaped decelerations were sometimes found in the NST recordings of normal fetuses accompanied by fetal movements, but the incidence of this type of deceleration tended to decrease as the subjects reached full term. No correlation was found between the occurrence of V-shaped deceleration during antepartum NST and that of variable deceleration during intrapartum monitoring. Taking 10 bpm and 10 seconds as the standard values of the acceleration amplitude and the duration of acceleration, respectively, there was found a significantly higher incidence of late deceleration during labor in the fetuses who showed nonreactive NST antepartally than those showed reactive NST. The incidence of persistent late deceleration was significantly higher in the nonreactive fetuses under the 10 bpm/10 second criteria than in those under the conventional 15 bpm/15 second criteria.
The activities of serum acid ribonuclease (RNase) were determined in patients with malignant neoplasm or with renal failure. The levels were markedly increased in myelogenous leukemia and renal failure, and only slightly increased in solid cancers, lymphoid malignancies and multiple myeloma. These increases correlated significantly with serum LDH activity in myelogenous leukemia and with creatinine levels in other malignancies or renal failure. The acid RNase content of granulocytes was 22.7-fold higher than that of lymphocytes. The increase of serum acid RNase may suggest an increased granulocyte destruction in myelogenous leukemia and a reduced glomerular filtration in other malignant neoplasms and renal failure.

Changes in the morphology and number of basophils were examined after the addition in vitro of house dust extract in cells from seventy-seven patients with bronchial asthma. Morphological changes (reactive basophils) showed a close relation to the end-point titrations of antigen in skin tests, RAST score and bronchial provocation tests, but changes in number of basophils did not. With a RAST score of 2 or greater the change in reactive basophils varied from 40 to 80% (mean 58.1%), which was much greater than seen in persons with no RAST, score 0. Patients with positive bronchial inhalation tests, showed 40 to 80% (mean 57.8%) reactive basophils, whereas persons with a negative bronchial challenge test showed a range of reactive basophils from 0 to 50% (mean 28.9%). The difference in percentage of reactive basophils between the positive and negative groups of persons tested by bronchial inhalation was statistically significant.
The effect of nifedipine, one of the calcium channel antagonists, was examined in allergic and nonspecific reactions using rat skin and peritoneal mast cells. Rat passive cutaneous anaphylaxis response mediated by IgE antibody was inhibited by nifedipine (100 micrograms/rat) and also by cromolyn sodium (5 mg/rat). Skin reactions induced by histamine or methacholine were not inhibited, and skin reaction induced by serotonin was slightly inhibited by these drugs. The 45Ca uptake and histamine release in sensitized mast cells stimulated by ovalbumin were suppressed by nifedipine. In actively sensitized cells, nifedipine seems to be more effective on the inhibition of 45Ca uptake, but less effective on histamine release than cromolyn sodium. In mast cells, nonimmunologically stimulated by concanavalin A, compound 48/80, and calcium ionophore A23187, nifedipine exerted considerable inhibitory effects on both 45Ca and histamine release.
45Ca uptake and histamine release was examined in mast cells from rats sensitized with ovalbumin and Bordetella Bertussis as an adjuvant. The uptake of 45Ca by the mast cells was significantly increased by stimulation with ovalbumin as was the release of histamine from the mast cells. Nifedipine, a calcium antagonist, inhibited the increase in both 45Ca uptake and histamine release stimulated by ovalbumin, though the effect on 45Ca uptake was stronger than that on histamine release.

Nucleoside analogues (3'-dG, Ara-A) have recently been found to be an effective chemical substance for inhibiting the recovery of potential lethal damage caused by radiation and anti-cancer drugs. By combination of radiation and inhibitors, both Ara-A and 3'-dG produced a higher sensitivity effect closer to the center of "Spheroid". In the experimental tumor S-180, combination of adriamycin , cyclophosphamide and Ara-A produced an eminent sensitivity effect amounting to the enhancement ratio of 1.24 and 1.36. By combination of 5-FU and 3'-dG, an enhancement ratio of 1.39 was obtained. These findings indicate the possibility that these inhibitors may be used as a chemosensitizer and also suggest that they would be useful for chemotherapy in the future.

Numerical changes in peripheral blood monocytes were examined in 125 patients with bronchial asthma using a new direct method of counting blood monocytes. The number of monocytes in non-attack stages of bronchial asthma was similar to that of healthy controls. The monocyte count observed in overall cases showed a significantly higher value both in pre-attack and attack stages than in non-attack stages. Changes in the number of monocytes in an individual spontaneous asthmatic cycle tended to increase in pre-attack stages, increase more markedly during asthma attacks, then to decrease after the attack was alleviated. Monocytes in cases with a positive test for bronchial challenge to house dust extract changed in almost the same manner as for spontaneous asthma attacks. The number of monocytes did not change during bronchospasm provoked by inhalation of acetylcholine. Exercise-induced asthma patients exhibited indefinite changes of monocytes; that is, some cases showed a significant increase in the number of monocytes related to the asthma cycle, but other cases did not show any appreciable change. These findings suggest that the number of monocytes in the peripheral blood may change in close relation to asthma attacks elicited by allergic reactions.
