[The effects of epidermal growth factor on the wound healing of deep partial thickness burn in rats].

OBJECTIVE: To observe the effects of recombinant human epidermal growth factor (rhEGF) on deep partial thickness burn wound healing. METHODS: The rats were inflicted with deep partial thickness burn. The wounds were either treated with rhEGF, rhEGF with heparin or isotonic saline, respectively. Wound healing time was observed. Wound healing rate, water content and hydroxyproline (OHP) content and type I/III collagen ratio in the wound tissue were determined. Cellular DNA cycle analysis and histological examination were processed. RESULTS: After the application of rhEGF, burn wound healing time was shortened by two days and wound content of OHP was increased (P < 0.05), with decreased collagen type I/III ratio (P < 0.05). As a result, granulation was enhanced and cellular DNA replication was accelerated (P < 0.05). Heparin addition could augment the effects of rhEGF, especially on wound healing time (2 days shorter) and granulation. CONCLUSION: The wound healing time of the deep partial thickness burn could be accelerated markedly by topical application of rhEGF, but early application did not show obvious effects. The addition of heparin might further accelerate wound healing.

[Practice and experience of the scientific research management].

The practice and experience of the scientific research management in Nanjing General Hospital from 1997 to 2002 is summarized in this review. By presenting the achievement gained in the past 6 years, the author prove to the scientific research managers that the effective manage thought is the key of scientific research management, and also expatriate the experience of the key points management in the management of scientific research subjects.

[Study on the treatment of head and neck late recurrence tumors by using multi-bullet radiofrequency therapy].

OBJECTIVE: To study the treatment to head and neck-late recurrence tumors by using multi-bullet radiofrequency therapy. METHOD: Eleven patients with late recurrence head and neck tumors were treated by using multi-bullet radiofrequency therapy. Before and after the therapy, the tumor size, pathologic alteration were assessed. The serial changes in tumor size after therapy were evaluated with CT imaging. The effects, side-effects and indications of this therapy were observed also. RESULT: The ablation, coagulation and necrosis of tumors were observed during the multi-bullet radiofrequency therapy in all this 11 patients. The tumors disappeared in CT scanning during 1.2-2.6 years follow up. CONCLUSION: Our study suggests that the multi-bullet radiofrequency therapy is a safe and effective treatment for patients with head and neck late recurrence tumors.

[The injury of nasal mucosa in transnasal endoscopic sinus surgery by light and heat].

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the injury of nasal mucosa in transnasal endoscopic sinus surgery by light and heat. METHOD: The techniques of transmission electron microscope and scanning electron microscope were applied in order to observe the changes between normal and irradiation nasal septum mucosa of rabbits. RESULT: It showed that after irradiation, the cilia became mal-distributed, adhesive and exfoliative. With the elongation of irradiation, the spacing of the epithelium cells increased, the distribution of the cilia was sparse and the degree of their thickness was different, the mitochondria were highly bloated, accompanied with disappearance of the cristae and vacuolation of matrix, the nucleus of epithelium cells was edge-located, the distribution of the chromatin was mass, concentrated by the fringe, the nucleus was close to the cell surface and the exfoliation of goblet cells was visible. CONCLUSION: The light and heat in transnasal endoscopic sinus surgery can injure the nasal mucosa.

[Construction of a microsatellite linkage map in a DH population].

A doubled haploid population (DH) consisting of 86 lines derived by anther culture of Peiai64s/E32, a two-line hybrid rice variety with high heterosis, was used to construct a microsatellite or SSLP linkage map of rice chromosomes. A total of 302 PCR primers for SSLP analysis on these chromosomes were chosen from a map published by Cornell University (designated CUMAP) and 127 (42.05%) of them were found polymorphic between the two parents. Those polymorphic PCR primers were used for population genotyping. The map (designated PEMAP) comprises 122 microsatellite maker loci, covering a total length of 1213.4 cM. The PEMAP is highly comparable with the CUMAP. Most of the markers were mapped onto the same chromosomes and aligned in the same order. Serious segregation distortion was observed in this DH population, with 34 (27.8%) markers showing significant deviation. It is noted that all markers on chromosomes 1,3,10 and 11 were biased to Peiai64s, while those on chromosomes 4,6,7,8 and 9 were opposite.

[Surgical treatment of De Bakey type III aortic dissection].

OBJECTIVE: To summarize the experience in surgical treatment of De Bakey type III aortic dissection and discuss the operative indications, techniques, and methods for spinal cord protection. METHODS: From January 1994 to January 2000, 49 patients with De Bakey type III aortic dissection were operated on. Of these patients, 35 were subjected to partial thoratical aorta replacement, 4 partial thoratical aorta replacement and plasty, 8 total thoratical aorta replacement, and 2 thoracoabdominal aorta replacement. In the 35 patients, the operations were performed by using the technique which preserved blood was transfused back by pump via the femoral artery. RESULTS: Hospital mortality in this group was 6.1% (3/49). Eight patients received emergence operation, and 1 patient died. Paraparesis developed in one patient (2.0%). Other complications included re-exploration for bleeding in 3 patients, and wound infection in 5. CONCLUSIONS: The rate of mortality and complication is high in patients with De Bakey type III aortic dissection. Appropriate operative techniques and methods of spinal cord protection are essential to resolve this problem.

[The nasosinus inverted papilloma with intracranial extension].

OBJECTIVE: To study the treatment of inverted papilloma (NIP) with intracranial extension. METHOD: Nine patients of NIP all suffered from the operation. Six patients with anterior skull base erosion suffered from large tumor resections via combined craniofacial and cranial approach. Three patients suffered from small tumor resections via transfrontal and transethmoidal sinus approach. The defects of basicranial bone and dura were repaired at the same time. Five patients were found the tissue canceration in the postoperation. RESULT: In 7 patients followed-up from 3 to 13 years, no one has recurrenced. CONCLUSION: The canceration probability of NIP with intracranial extension should be sufficiently considered. The tumor resection via combined craniofacial approach or transfrontal approach must be based on the tumor size and extension, and removed completely.
