Anion binding inhibition of the formation of a helical organogel.

A chiral tris(urea) organogelator gels dmso-water and methanol-water mixtures at low weight percent. The formation of the helical gel fibres is partially inhibited by addition of chloride, which is bound by the gelator, resulting in fully crystalline material characterised by X-ray crystallography.

Unusual variations in the incidence of Z' > 1 in oxo-anion structures.

A series of Cambridge Structural Database studies show that ionic species generally form low Z' structures, even in those cases where charge assisted hydrogen bonding is a key feature, e.g. oxo-anion complexes. By introducing a competing pi-pi stacking interaction, two oxo-anion compounds are shown to crystallise with more than one molecule in the asymmetric unit, including the first hydrogen phosphate containing structure to have Z' > 2.

A modular approach to anion binding podands: adaptability in design and synthesis leads to adaptability in properties.

Progress in the development of a modular approach towards flexible anion-binding and sensing systems is reviewed within the context of related developments in conformationally flexible anion- and salt-binding hosts. The transferability of concepts and structural features across chemically distinct systems is emphasised along with the use of modular components in polymer and gel-phase systems.

A conformationally flexible, urea-based tripodal anion receptor: solid-state, solution, and theoretical studies.

Tripodal tris(urea) cationic receptors 1 and 2 containing p-tolyl or octyl substituents, respectively, have been synthesized, and their association behavior with anionic guests has been studied via a variety of methods. The receptors are based around a hexasubstituted aryl core and contain both urea and pyridinium functionalities. For 1:1 complexes, anions reside within the central cavity of the host species, held by hydrogen bonds from both NH and CH donors. The following host-anion complexes have been characterized by X-ray crystallography: 1-(Br)3, 1-(PF6)3.2(CH3)2CO, and 1-(NO3)1.5(PF6)1.5. Each structure contains the receptor in a significantly different geometry, highlighting the anion-dependent conformational flexibility of 1. Solution 1H NMR spectroscopic titrations have shown the two host species to display significant affinity for both halides and hydrogen sulfate and strongly suggest the persistence of CH...X- interactions despite the presence of "stronger" NH donor groups. Variable-temperature 1H NMR studies on the more soluble octyl derivative 2 show that there is a distinct change in conformation associated with the formation of a 1:1 host/guest complex. Computations using density functional theory (with the B3LYP functional) have been employed to aid in understanding the geometry of the 1:1 host/chloride complexes of 1 and 2. These experiments suggest that the lowest energy conformation for 1-Cl is one in which the ureidopyridinium arms are orientated upward forming a cavity that is sealed by CH...pi interactions, effectively forming a unimolecular capsule, whereas for 2 a less symmetrical "2-up, 1-down" geometry is favored.

Pyridinium CH...anion and pi-stacking interactions in modular tripodal anion binding hosts: ATP binding and solid-state chiral induction.

The preparation of two new tripodal "pinwheel" type anion hosts based on a triethylbenzene core and bipyridinium or ethylnicotinium arms is reported. The new materials bind anions via CH...anion interactions. Complexes with Br(-) and PF(6)(-) have been characterised by X-ray crystallography as both solvates in a pure form. In the bipyridinium host CH...F interactions to PF(6)(-) induce a chiral C(3) symmetric conformation that is disrupted in the hydrate. The compound is also selective for ATP(2-) in aqueous acetonitrile.

Cooperative hydrogen-bonding effects in a water square: a single-crystal neutron and partial atomic charges and hardness analysis study.

Four isomorphous complexes of formula [M(L)(4)(H(2)O)(2)]SO(4).2H(2)O (M = Co, 1a; Ni, 1b; Cu, 1c; Zn, 1d) have been isolated and characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and neutron diffraction using the quasi-Laue diffractometer VIVALDI at the Institut Laue-Langevin as well as by thermogravimetric analysis. The structures contain a discrete, strongly hydrogen-bonded water tetramer which causes a significant distortion of the metal coordination sphere in each case. Partial atomic charges and hardness analysis (PACHA) calculations reveal that the shortest hydrogen bonds are not the strongest in this constrained, cyclic solid-state structure and show that the distortion at the metal center is caused by the drive to maintain the integrity of the water tetramer. The system undergoes a disorder-order transition on slow cooling that provides insight into the nature of communication between water squares.

Polyaza metacyclophanes as ditopic anion receptors.

Five macrocyclic polyaza metacyclophanes L1-L5 prepared by dipode coupling of the tosylated precursors have been studied. The basicity of the ligands has been measured potentiometrically and their ability to complex halides and perchlorate has been studied in the solid state by X-ray crystallography. The results reveal that the ligands generally act as ditopic halide receptors with even the largest, L5, being too small to envelop the anion. The ligand's basicity behaviour parallels that observed for related para-analogues. Despite the ready crystallisation of fluoride, HF2-, chloride, bromide, iodide and triiodide salts in the solid state, there appears to be little affinity for halides in aqueous solution in the pH range accessible via potentiometry. The results do give a detailed insight into the role of the aryl ring in restricting the conformational flexibility of the ligands and, hence, the ability to chelate perching anions.

Multiple nitrene insertions into metal-sulfur bonds of dithiocarbamate complexes: synthesis of sulfido-amido and zwitterionic tetraamido complexes.

The iodine(III) reagent, PhI[double bond, length as m-dash]NTs, acts as a source of the nitrene fragment NTs, which undergoes facile insertion into the metal-sulfur bonds of a range of dithiocarbamate complexes. Addition of two equivalents of PhI=NTs to [M(S(2)CNR2)2] affords sulfido-amido complexes [M{SC(NR2)SNTs}2](M=Ni, Cu), which insert two further nitrene fragments to afford zwitterionic tetraamido complexes [M{TsNSC(NR2)SNTs}2](M=Co, Ni, Cu). Crystallographic studies have been carried out on both types of complex allowing possible resonance hydrids of the new ligand types to be assessed.

Anion and cation binding by a pendant arm cyclam and its macrobicyclic derivatives.

A series of transition-metal complexes of N,N',N'',N'''-tetra(3-hydroxypropyl)cyclam (L1) are reported. The X-ray structures of the compounds reveal pendant arm coordination of one of the alcohol groups to give square-pyramidal metal centres with simultaneous hydrogen bonding to the counter anions. Ligand L1 has been elaborated to form a series of macrotricyclic derivatives that form 1 ratio 1 complexes with Cu(II) and Ni(II). The X-ray structure of the tetrahydrate and protonated forms of L1 are also reported.

A study of [Co2(alkyne)(binap)(CO)4] complexes (BINAP=(1,1'-binaphthalene)-2,2'-diylbis(diphenylphosphine)).

Understanding the interaction of chiral ligands, alkynes, and alkenes with cobaltcarbonyl sources is critical to learning more about the mechanism of the catalytic, asymmetric Pauson-Khand reaction. We have successfully characterized complexes of the type [Co2(alkyne)(binap)(CO)4] (BINAP=(1,1'-binaphthalene)-2,2'-diylbis(diphenylphosphine)) and shown that diastereomer interconversion occurs under Pauson-Khand reaction conditions when alkyne=HC[triple bond]CCO2Me. Attempts to isolate [Co2(alkyne)(binap)(CO)x] complexes with coordinated alkenes led to the formation of cobaltacyclopentadiene species.

Influence of hydrogen bonding on coordination polymer assembly.

An extended dipyridyl ligand (L1) capable of hydrogen bonding with guest species via urea functionalities has been designed and synthesised. Assembly of a silver(I) coordination polymer of L1 is dependent on the nature of the hydrogen bond acceptor in a logical extension of the monopyridyl analogue.

A highly efficient, preorganized macrobicyclic receptor for halides based on CH... and NH...anion interactions.

The preorganized, macrobicyclic azaphane (1) exhibits remarkable strong, selective fluoride binding comparable to the most effective bis(tren) cryptands despite binding anions via only three NH groups coupled with three CH hydrogen bond donors. The lower intrinsic affinity of CH donors is compensated by the high degree of preorganization exhibited by azacyclophane 1. Compound 1 is prepared via a tripod-tripod cyclization reaction between 1,3,5-tris-bromomethyl-benzene and an aliphatic tripodal hexatosylated polyamine, followed by the reduction of the resulting bicyclic tosylamine. The crystal structures of the bicyclic tosylamine 2 and four macrobicyclic polyammonium halide salts of 1 are reported. X-ray studies revealed the formation of inclusive 1:1 complexes of 1 with fluoride, chloride, bromide, and iodide. Potentiometric titrations showed very high binding constants for fluoride and chloride with a F(-)/Cl(-) selectivity of more than five logarithmic units. The final geometry of the anion cryptates is largely determined by optimization of NH and CH...anion interactions coupled with unfavorable anion-pi repulsion for the larger anions.
