The Wild Soybean C3HC4-Type RING Zinc-Finger Protein ZFP4 Enhances Resistance to Soybean Mosaic Virus.

Soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] is a globally important source of protein and edible oil, but is severely threatened by soybean mosaic virus (SMV). Wild soybean [Glycine soja Sieb. & Zucc.], the wild ancestor of cultivated soybean, exhibits high genetic diversity and strong resistance to pathogens. In this study, we identified a novel SMV resistance locus RSC7-4 and its candidate gene ZFP4 from wild soybean, encoding a C3HC4-type RING zinc-finger protein. The knockout mutants of ZFP4 showed enhanced susceptibility to SMV strains SC7 and SC3, while its overexpressing lines conferred resistance without yield penalty; ZFP4 mediates resistance by inhibiting GSTT1 to increase glutathione and reduce excessive reactive oxygen species accumulation. Domestication analysis revealed reduced genetic diversity of ZFP4 in cultivated soybean, with the resistant ZFP4Hap1 underutilized in breeding. In summary, this study provides not only excellent genetic resources for SMV-resistant soybean breeding but also new insights into the regulatory mechanisms of soybean resistance to SMV.

Hexaconazole enantiomers drive the dissemination and risks of antibiotic resistance genes in the soil-earthworm system.

Chiral fungicides constitute a substantial proportion of commonly used pesticides; however, the spread of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in agricultural settings under repeated exposure to different enantiomers is still unclear. Here, the prevalence and potential risks of ARGs were investigated in the soil-earthworm ecosystem when exposed to hexaconazole (HEX) enantiomers. Metagenomic analysis indicated that R-HEX and S-HEX facilitated the dissemination of ARGs in soil without earthworms, but this effect diminished with successive exposures. Notably, S-HEX exhibited a greater effect on ARG profiles compared to R-HEX. Furthermore, HEX enantiomers, particularly S-HEX, increased the mobility potential of ARGs and enhanced host pathogenicity, thereby contributing to elevated ecological risks. Specifically, exposure to the HEX enantiomer led to an enrichment of dominant pathogenic ARG hosts, such as Enterobacteriaceae. Importantly, earthworms alleviated the enantiomer-driven dissemination of ARGs and weakened their association with mobile genetic elements (MGEs). Overall, this study offers novel perspectives on the enantiomer-driven propagation of ARGs induced by the chiral pesticide hexaconazole in soil and highlights the role of earthworms in mitigating ARG contamination. These findings contribute significantly to the risk assessment and remediation strategies for chiral pesticides.

Maternal vitamin B12 deprivation exacerbates offspring obesity by reducing early-life colonization with Bifidobacterium pseudolongum.

Vitamin B12 deficiency during pregnancy and lactation is common, yet its mechanistic impact on reproductive outcomes and offspring health remains poorly understood. Here, we show that maternal dietary vitamin B12 deprivation not only impairs maternal glucose metabolism and reproductive outcomes but also exacerbates high-fat-diet-induced obesity in offspring. These effects are mediated by gut microbiota and associated with a marked reduction of Bifidobacterium pseudolongum (B. pseudolongum) in both dams and their offspring. Maternal vitamin B12 deprivation limits early-life acquisition of B. pseudolongum in offspring during lactation, subsequently intensifying obesity and metabolic dysregulation. Early-life restoration of B. pseudolongum or its key metabolite, acetate, effectively ameliorates this aggravated obesity. Mechanistically, acetate acts through the Ffar2 receptor to upregulate Ehhadh expression. Together, these data establish that perinatal nutrition imprints long-term metabolic phenotypes in offspring via early-life acquisition of the gut microbiota, with a critical window during lactation.

Eco-evolutionary dynamics sustain a potent yet rare antibiotic gene cluster in Streptomyces.

Microbial secondary metabolites have been recognized and utilized for nearly a century. Nevertheless, the eco-evolutionary mechanisms governing their distribution among microorganisms remain largely unresolved. In this study, we examined intraspecific interactions within Streptomyces albidoflavus and identified a strain exhibiting potent antagonistic activity against conspecifics. This "killer" phenotype was attributed to the production of kosinostatin, a hybrid aromatic polyketide antibiotic. Evolutionary genomic analyses provided strong evidence that the kosinostatin biosynthetic gene cluster was horizontally acquired in S. albidoflavus over a relatively short evolutionary timescale, a finding consistent with its sparse distribution within this species, across the genus Streptomyces, and even throughout the phylum Actinomycetota. Using microcosm assays, we demonstrated that the kosinostatin producer outcompeted sensitive conspecifics in liquid culture but not in soil, indicating that environmental context plays a key role in altering the fitness benefits of this cluster. Moreover, the competitive advantage was observed only in the presence of sensitive strains, revealing a trade-off between fitness benefits and metabolic costs. These results highlight the role of context-dependent selection in shaping the evolutionary persistence of the kosinostatin cluster. The current distribution pattern of this cluster in S. albidoflavus likely results from a dynamic interplay of intraspecific horizontal gene transfer, vertical inheritance, and recurrent gene loss. Overall, our findings establish an eco-evolutionary framework that explains the rarity of a potent antibiotic gene cluster in Streptomyces, illustrating how environmental constraints, fitness trade-offs, and gene flux collectively orchestrate the biosynthetic architecture of Streptomyces species.

Positive association between apolipoprotein B and colorectal cancer risk: Findings from a 14-year follow-up cohort study and Mendelian randomization analyses.

BACKGROUND: The effects of lipid traits on colorectal cancer (CRC) risk and the extent to which obesity may modify these effects remain unclear. OBJECTIVE: To examine the associations between lipid traits and CRC risk using an observational study and Mendelian randomization (MR) analyses, and the role of weight status in the potential associations. METHODS: In the Guangzhou Biobank Cohort Study (GBCS), lipid profiles were measured during 2003-2008, and CRC events were identified through record linkage with the cancer registry. MR analyses assessed the causal effects of lipid traits on CRC using a genome-wide association study meta-analysis of 185,616 Europeans. RESULTS: Among 28,576 GBCS participants followed until 2020, 599 CRC events occurred. Participants in the highest quartile of apolipoprotein B (apoB) had a higher CRC risk (hazard ratio [HR] 1.43, 95% CI 1.02-2.01). This association remained in those with overweight/obesity (HR 2.21, 95% CI 1.28-3.83). MR analyses supported a detrimental effect of apoB on CRC (odds ratio 1.12 per 1 SD, 95% CI 1.02-1.22). MR analyses also showed positive associations for total cholesterol and the apoB/apolipoprotein A-I ratio, which were not significant in the observational study. CONCLUSION: Higher apoB levels were associated with an increased CRC risk in both observational and MR analyses, suggesting a potential role of apoB in CRC prevention, especially among participants with overweight/obesity. However, the limitations of single-time lipid measurements and the use of different ancestries across study designs indicate the need for further research to confirm the robustness and generalizability of the findings.

Semi-Poisson statistics in quantum chaos.

We investigate the quantum properties of a nonrandom Hamiltonian with a steplike singularity. It is shown that the eigenfunctions are multifractals and, in a certain range of parameters, the level statistics is described exactly by semi-Poisson statistics (SP) typical of pseudointegrable systems. It is also shown that our results are universal, namely, they depend exclusively on the presence of the steplike singularity and are not modified by smooth perturbations of the potential or the addition of a magnetic flux. Although the quantum properties of our system are similar to those of a disordered conductor at the Anderson transition, we report important quantitative differences in both the level statistics and the multifractal dimensions controlling the transition. Finally, the study of quantum transport properties suggests that the classical singularity induces quantum anomalous diffusion. We discuss how these findings may be experimentally corroborated by using ultracold atoms techniques.

Dynamical noise filter and conditional entropy analysis in chaos synchronization.

It is shown that, in a chaotic synchronization system whose driving signal is exposed to channel noise, the estimation of the drive system states can be greatly improved by applying the dynamical noise filtering to the response system states. If the noise is bounded in a certain range, the estimation errors, i.e., the difference between the filtered responding states and the driving states, can be made arbitrarily small. This property can be used in designing an alternative digital communication scheme. An analysis based on the conditional entropy justifies the application of dynamical noise filtering in generating quality synchronization.

Anomalous heat conduction and anomalous diffusion in nonlinear lattices, single walled nanotubes, and billiard gas channels.

We study anomalous heat conduction and anomalous diffusion in low-dimensional systems ranging from nonlinear lattices, single walled carbon nanotubes, to billiard gas channels. We find that in all discussed systems, the anomalous heat conductivity can be connected with the anomalous diffusion, namely, if energy diffusion is sigma(2)(t)=2Dt(alpha) (0 1) implies an anomalous heat conduction with a divergent thermal conductivity (beta>0), and more interestingly, a subdiffusion (alpha<1) implies an anomalous heat conduction with a convergent thermal conductivity (beta<0), consequently, the system is a thermal insulator in the thermodynamic limit. Existing numerical data support our theoretical prediction.

[Membrane used for separation of the effective parts and components of traditional Chinese medicine].

Membrane separation, as an efficient and green technology, has found more and more research and development reports in the separation and purification of the effective parts and components of traditional Chinese medicine. The basic principle and mechanism was first described in this paper, and the applicability and technological advantage was analyzed accordingly. Then, the separation performance of commonly employed membrane materials including polymeric materials such as polysulfones, cellulose acetate, polyacrylonitrile as well as inorganic materials was compared out and the application examples were presented. Finally, the major considerations in choosing the membrane materials were tentatively listed, including the physical and chemical stability, the flux and selectivity, membrane fouling, and pretreatment of membrane surface.

Fourier law in the alternate-mass hard-core potential chain.

We study energy transport in a one-dimensional model of elastically colliding particles with alternate masses m and M. In order to prevent total momentum conservation, we confine particles with mass M inside a cell of finite size. We provide convincing numerical evidence for the validity of Fourier law of heat conduction in spite of the lack of exponential dynamical instability. Comparison with previous results on similar models shows the relevance of the role played by total momentum conservation.

[Impact of traditional Chinese medicine WPY on ICAM-1 expression and MPO activity in pancreas and lungs of rats with acute necrotizing pancreatitis].

OBJECTIVE: To explore the character of the ICAM-1 induced change of polymorphonuclear neutrophil (PMN) in the pancreas and lung of rats with acute necrotizing pancreatitis (ANP) and to evaluate the effects of Chinese medicine WPY on ANP. METHODS: ANP model was induced by retrograde injection of 3.5% sodium taurocholic acid into the biliopancreatic duct of Wistar rats. Expression of ICAM-1 at different time points in pancreas and lung was assessed by immunohistochemistry. The quantity of polymorphonuclear neutrophil (PMN) in tissues was measured by the level of myeloperoxidase activity (MPO). In addition, the indices above were also observed after the administration of WPY. RESULTS: In the ANP group, ICAM-1 expression and MPO activity were evidently up-regulated at 3 h in pancreas and at 6 h in lung, and both reached their highest level at 12 h. In the WPY treated group, ICAM-1 expression and MPO activity in pancreas and lung were significantly decreased at 12 h. CONCLUSION: The numerous PMNs infiltration mediated by ICAM-1 plays an important role in the damage to pancreas and lung caused by ANP. The traditional Chinese medicine WPY can attenuate ICAM-1 expression and MPO activity in pancreas and lung during ANP.

Anomalous heat conduction and anomalous diffusion in one-dimensional systems.

We establish a connection between anomalous heat conduction and anomalous diffusion in one-dimensional systems. It is shown that if the mean square of the displacement of the particle is =2Dt(alpha)(0 1) implies anomalous heat conduction with a divergent thermal conductivity (beta>0). More interestingly, subdiffusion (alpha<1) implies anomalous heat conduction with a convergent thermal conductivity (beta<0), and, consequently, the system is a thermal insulator in the thermodynamic limit. Existing numerical data support our results.

Heat conductivity in linear mixing systems.

We present analytical and numerical results on the heat conduction in a linear mixing system. In particular we consider a quasi-one-dimensional channel with triangular scatterers with internal angles which are irrational multiples of pi, and we show that the system obeys the Fourier law of heat conduction. Therefore, deterministic diffusion and normal heat transport which are usually associated with full hyperbolicity, actually take place in systems without exponential instability.
