How to kill a mandate. Hospital lobby persuades Scully, CMS to scuttle proposal that would have required hospitals to measure patient satisfaction.

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services has backed off its plan to require all Medicare-certified hospitals to publicly report mandatory patient surveys, Modern Healthcare has learned. Instead, no regulations will be written and hospitals will be asked to voluntarily use surveys. Regulation redux. As Maine flirts with rate-setting for hospitals, other states study some regulatory solutions for controlling healthcare costs.

Hospitals in Maine breathed a sigh of relief after a proposal to regulate hospital prices was removed from a state healthcare reform bill. But the move shows that health insurers there and across the country are targeting hospitals as lawmakers struggle to shoot down rising healthcare costs. Maine Gov.
