Comparison of high-resolution solid-state NMR MQMAS and STMAS methods for half-integer quadrupolar nuclei.

Several different amplitude-modulated two-dimensional high-resolution methods, based on MQMAS and STMAS, are compared. They include 3QMAS, 5QMAS, DQ-STMAS, and DQF-STMAS experiments. A new method, called t1-split-STMAS, is also proposed for spin-3/2 nuclei. The comparison is performed in terms of isotropic resolution and spectral-width, efficiency, and sensitivity to magic-angle offset and spinning speed fluctuations.

Resolution enhancement in 1D solid-state NMR spectra of spin-9/2 quadrupolar nuclei.

NMR is an insensitive spectroscopy, which often requires numerous accumulations, especially for 2D high-resolution methods (MQMAS and STMAS) for quadrupolar nuclei in solids. This may be a very important limitation for the case of insensitive nuclei, where a 1D spectrum with better resolution than the central-transition is then highly desirable. This problem has been addressed for the case of spin-5/2 nuclei by the Double-Quantum Filtered Satellite Transition Spectroscopy: DQF-SATRAS-ST(1). We extend this concept to the spin-9/2 nuclei with the SATRAS-ST(2) method. This method allows the observation of 1D spectra with a much better resolution than that observed in the isotropic projection of 2D MQ/ST(1)-MAS spectra. This enhanced resolution results from the much smaller homogeneous broadening that occurs on the SATRAS-ST(2) method as compared to MQ/ST(1)-MAS spectra. The main interest in this method is for well-crystallized samples.

SPAM-MQ-HETCOR: an improved method for heteronuclear correlation spectroscopy between quadrupolar and spin-1/2 nuclei in solid-state NMR.

The recently introduced concept of soft pulse added mixing (SPAM) is used in two-dimensional heteronuclear correlation (HETCOR) NMR experiments between half-integer quadrupolar and spin-1/2 nuclei. The experiments employ multiple quantum magic angle spinning (MQMAS) to remove the second order quadrupolar broadening and cross polarization (CP) or refocused INEPT for magnetization transfer. By using previously unexploited coherence pathways, the efficiency of SPAM-MQ-HETCOR NMR is increased by a factor of almost two without additional optimization. The sensitivity gain is demonstrated on a test sample, AlPO(4)-14, using CP and INEPT to correlate (27)Al and (31)P nuclei. SPAM-3Q-HETCOR is then applied to generate (27)Al-(31)P spectra of the devitrified 41Na(2)O-20.5Al(2)O(3)-38.5P(2)O(5) glass and the silicoaluminophosphate ECR-40. Finally, the method allowed the acquisition of the first high resolution solid-state correlation spectra between (27)Al and (29)Si.

Hadamard NMR spectroscopy in solids.

The duration of 2D and 3D NMR experiments in solids can be reduced by several orders of magnitude by using frequency domain Hadamard encoding with long selective pulses. We demonstrate Hadamard encoded experiments in (13)C enriched solids samples. To avoid multiple quantum interferences, the Hadamard encoding pulses are applied sequentially rather than simultaneously in this study. Among other possible applications, dipolar assisted rotational resonance experiments and measurement of NOESY type build-up rates in proton driven spin diffusion are demonstrated.

A very sensitive high-resolution NMR method for quadrupolar nuclei: SPAM-DQF-STMAS.

We show that by combining the intrinsically larger (with respect to MQMAS) efficiency of Double-Quantum Filtered Satellite-Transition MAS (DQF-STMAS), with the large S/N gain of the Soft-Pulse Added Mixing (SPAM) concept, a new very sensitive high-resolution solid-state NMR method can be obtained for semi-integer quadrupolar nuclei.

I-STMAS, a new high-resolution solid-state NMR method for half-integer quadrupolar nuclei.

In complement to the previously proposed multiple-quantum magic-angle-spinning (MQMAS) and satellite transition MAS (STMAS) sequences, we describe a new two-dimensional high-resolution method, inverse-STMAS (I-STMAS) that allows second-order quadrupolar averaging. Like STMAS, I-STMAS correlates second-order quadrupole dephasing occurring on coherences related to the central transition (CT) and satellite transitions (STs), but does it in a reverse manner: CT evolves during the t(1) period while STs are detected during t(2). Although STMAS and I-STMAS are symmetric, there are some interesting and useful differences between the two methods. For example, we show that during the acquisition time t(2), it is possible to over-sample the data and then to process them to suppress the CT-CT correlation resonance.

Triple-quantum magic angle spinning (27)Al NMR of aluminum hydroxides.

We show that (27)Al triple-quantum magic angle spinning (3Q-MAS) experiments alleviate the second-order quadrupolar broadening to reveal the structure-building units of nonequivalent aluminum octahedra in the most extensively studied aluminum hydroxides, namely, gibbsite, bayerite, and boehmite. Further, aided by ab initio calculations of the electric field gradient tensors, the 3Q-MAS/MAS results are shown to lead to the assignment of (27)Al isotropic resonances to the aluminum positions in their X-ray-determined structures. The present work paves the way for future studies on various structurally transformed materials derived from these basic aluminum hydroxides.

Double-resonance decoupling for resolution enhancement of 31P solid-state MAS and 27Al --> 31P MQHETCOR NMR.

27Al decoupling has been used to remove residual J-coupling interactions between 31P and 27Al in microporous aluminophosphates AlPO4-14 and AlPO4-40. In combination with 1H high-power decoupling, 27Al adapted decoupling yields 31P spectra with optimal sensitivity and resolution. The importance of double-resonance decoupling is further demonstrated by incorporating this technique in the MQHETCOR sequence. Unambiguous assignment of all the AlPO4-14 nuclear magnetic resonances is achieved by combining multiple-quantum evolution in the 27Al dimension and double-resonance decoupling in the 31P acquisition domain.

Multinuclear (27Al, 29Si, 47,49Ti) solid-state NMR of titanium substituted zeolite USY.

Multinuclear solid-state NMR spectroscopy, employing 29Si MAS,27Al MAS/3Q-MAS and (47,49)Ti wide-line experiments, has been used for the structural characterization of titanium substituted ultra-stable zeolite Y (Ti-USY). 27Al MAS experiments show the presence of aluminum in four (Al(IV)), five (Al(V)), and six (Al(VI)) coordination, whereas the multiplicity within Al(IV) and Al(VI) is revealed by 27Al 3Q-MAS experiments. Two different tetrahedral and octahedral Al environments are resolved and their isotropic chemical shifts (delta(CS)) and second-order quadrupole interaction parameters (P(Q)) have been determined by a graphical analysis of the 3Q-MAS spectra. The emergence of signal with higher intensity at -101 ppm in the 29Si MAS spectrum of Ti-USY samples indicates the possible occurrence of Q4(3Si,1Ti) type silicon environments due to titanium substitution in the faujasite framework. High-field (11.74T) operation, using a probehead specially designed to handle a large sample volume, has enabled the acquisition of 47,49Ti static spectra and identification of the titanium environment in the zeolite. The chemical shielding and electric field gradient tensors for the titanium environment in the zeolite have been determined by a computer simulation of the quadrupolar broadened static 47,49Ti NMR spectra.
