Percolation quantum phase transitions in diluted magnets.

We show that the interplay of geometric criticality and quantum fluctuations leads to a novel universality class for the percolation quantum phase transition in diluted magnets. All critical exponents involving dynamical correlations are different from the classical percolation values, but in two dimensions they can nonetheless be determined exactly. We develop a complete scaling theory of this transition, and we relate it to recent experiments in La2Cu(1-p)(Zn,Mg)(p)O4. Our results are also relevant for disordered interacting boson systems.

Correlated disorder in random block copolymers.

We study the effect of a random Flory-Huggins parameter in a symmetric diblock copolymer melt which is expected to occur in a copolymer where one block is near its structural glass transition. In the clean limit the microphase segregation between the two blocks causes a weak, fluctuation induced first order transition to a lamellar state. Using a renormalization group approach combined with the replica trick to treat the quenched disorder, we show that beyond a critical disorder strength, which depends on the length of the polymer chain, the character of the transition is changed. The system becomes dominated by strong randomness and a glassy rather than an ordered lamellar state occurs. A renormalization of the effective disorder distribution leads to nonlocal disorder correlations that reflect strong compositional fluctuation on the scale of the radius of gyration of the polymer chains. The reason for this behavior is shown to be the chain length dependent role of critical fluctuations, which are less important for shorter chains and become increasingly more relevant as the polymer length increases and the clean first order transition becomes weaker.

Superconductivity in charge Kondo systems.

We present a theory for superconductivity and charge Kondo fluctuations, i.e., resonant quantum valence fluctuations by two charge units, for Tl-doped PbTe. We show that Tl is very special as it first supplies a certain amount of charge carriers to the PbTe-valence band and then puts itself into a self-tuned resonant state to yield a new, robust pairing mechanism for these carriers.

Pairing and superconductivity driven by strong quasiparticle renormalization in two-dimensional organic charge transfer salts.

We introduce and analyze a variational wave function for quasi-two-dimensional kappa-(ET)(2) organic salts containing strong local and nonlocal correlation effects. We find an unconventional superconducting ground state for intermediate charge carrier interaction, sandwiched between a conventional metal at weak coupling and a spin liquid at larger coupling. Most remarkably, the excitation spectrum is dramatically renormalized and is found to be the driving force for the formation of the unusual superconducting state.

Quantum phase transitions of magnetic rotons.

Because of weak spin-orbit coupling and broken inversion symmetry the paramagnons of an itinerant, almost ferromagnetic system become magnetic rotons. Using self-consistent Hartree and renormalization group calculations, we study weak fluctuation-driven first-order quantum phase transitions, a quantum tricritical point controlled by anisotropy, and non-Fermi liquid behavior associated with the large phase volume of magnetic rotons. We propose that magnetic rotons are essential for the description of the anomalous high-pressure behavior of the itinerant helical ferromagnet MnSi.

Glassy behavior in systems with Kac-type step-function interaction.

We study a system with a weak, long-ranged repulsive Kac-type step-function interaction within the framework of a replicated effective phi(4) theory. The occurrence of extensive configurational entropy or an exponentially large number of metastable minima in the free energy (characteristic of a glassy state), is demonstrated. The underlying mechanism of mesoscopic patterning and defect organizations is discussed.
