Consequences of sexual decisions: the perceptions of rural adolescents.

The purpose of this study was to examine the content of adolescent thinking about the consequences of choosing abstinence, sexual intercourse with a condom, and unprotected intercourse. Consequences for the relationship and for each partner's thoughts and feelings were explored. Participants were 116 high school students living in a rural area of a midwestern state; their average age was 16 years. They completed a series of open-ended questions about possible outcomes to a scenario involving sexual decision making. Content analysis of responses revealed that about half of the participants associated abstinence with positive consequences; however, it was also associated with insecurity and the possibility of losing the relationship. Sexual intercourse with a condom was viewed as an indication of caring and responsibility and was associated with positive outcomes for the relationship. Identified consequences of unprotected intercourse were almost entirely negative. Some differences in perceived consequences were influenced by the gender of the partner. Integration of these findings into programs designed to prevent sexual risk-taking is discussed.

Use of an interactive teaching program to teach medical workers, about MUMPS programming.

The MUMPS computer language is widely and increasingly used for medical applications. It is useful for medical students and others in the medical environment to have an understanding of such languages that can help them perform their jobs well. The author is therefore making available an interactive teaching program to instruct such people in the MUMPS computer language. Use of the teaching program is reported for 19 novice MUMPS programmers and compared with results for two experienced programmers. Free-text comments by the novices emphasize areas in which they had difficulty. There is a considerable variation in the mean time taken by the novices to answer the questions, and in the number of questions repeated because of erroneous answers. Most novices found the teaching program very helpful. A copy of the Standard MUMPS teaching program and the QUEST driver on which it is based has been sent to 24 institutions, including six in Europe and one in Japan, for further use.

History and future of the MUMPS in medical computing.

MUMPS is an integrated language and operating system. It was originally developed in the mid 60s, primarily for the interactive manipulation of text-like, hierachical data found so pervasively in medicine. This paper traces the growth in use of MUMPS. Some of the many medical application for which MUMPS is used are discussed, as are the achievements and goals of the MUMPS Users' Group, particularly in facilitating application transfer. The influence of federal funding upon the growth and use of MUMPS is noted. Of particular importance is the federal support of the MUMPS Development Committee in the standardization of MUMPS, and the MUMPS User's Group in promoting MUMPS information and application exchange.

Isolated pulmonary Goodpasture syndrome.

The case of a 13-year-old girl with Goodpasture syndrome is reported. The presentation at this age with only pulmonary hemorrhage is unusual among Goodpasture syndrome patients. The case illustrates well the diagnostic difficulties in Goodpasture syndrome. The choices of treatment modalities available for this disease and the results and risks of such treatment options are reviewed. A discussion and classification of diffuse pulmonary hemorrhage is presented. The case emphasizes that Goodpasture syndrome should be considered in the differential diagnosis of diffuse pulmonary hemorrhage in spite of a lack of renal abnormalities and that serum anti-glomerular basement membrane antibody testing can be of great help in confirming the diagnosis.

The Village AIDS Day Treatment Program: a model of interdisciplinary and interdependent care.

This article describes the Village AIDS Day Treatment Program, a program for people living with HIV/AIDS that provides health care by using a full range of interdependent services. Opened in 1988, this program was the first of its kind in the country. It has provided leadership in developing a model of care that addresses the full spectrum of health care--promotion, prevention, maintenance, and treatment. Along with describing the program and its services, this article includes the program's history and its influencing philosophies.

The importance of orofacial myofunctional therapy in pediatric dentistry: reports of two cases.

It is essential that the practitioner determine the factors that are etiologically operative in oral myofunctional therapy in order to establish effective methods of intervention. Of these methods, cephalometrics and facial analysis are especially valuable in revealing and differentiating open-bite syndrome. We indicated two cases treated with only the theory of myofunctional therapy and evaluated with cephalometric radiographs and intraoral photos. This is the first report to evaluate for treatment change of myofunctional therapy with cephalometric radiographs.

The challenge of special needs patients.

The trend toward mainstreaming the mentally retarded into society increases the contact that medical facilities and hospitals have with them. Accurate assessment of the patient's functioning ability and adaptation of methods and techniques are necessary for success in producing informative radiographs. The radiographer's goals are to perceive the mentally retarded as people with dignity and respect and to administer radiographic procedures with compassion and understanding.
