[The tick-borne encephalitis in Poland].

The paper presents an epidemiological analysis of 816 cases of tick borne encephalitis reported in Poland since 1970. A particular attention was paid towards 240 cases notified in 1993 with 94% confirmed serologically. Infections occurred between May and November, particularly in July, August and October. Encephalitis prevailed in persons 20-49 years old (65%) and most of them occurred in males (59%). In endemic areas infections among towns dwellers prevailed.

[Program for elimination and eradication of poliomyelitis caused by wild polioviruses in Poland].

Since 1988 the programme coordinated by the WHO of elimination and eradication poliomyelitis by the year 2000 is performed. In this article the following topics are presented: 1) the criteria of elimination and eradication of poliomyelitis caused by wild polioviruses; 2) the epidemiological situation in the world, European Region and Poland; 3) the role and activities of epidemiologists, clinicians and virologists in the programme.

[Routes of transmission of hepatitis B in Piotrokow and Sieradz provinces in 1986-1987].

Epidemiological investigations of 1883 cases of acute viral hepatitis type B reported in two voivodships (Piotrków, Sieradz) has been analysed. In 1104 cases (58%) parenteral procedures for therapeutical and diagnostic purposes have been performed during 6 months before the onset of disease. The incidence of cases after medical procedures was the highest in children aged 0-4 years (67%) and adult persons aged over 50 years (68%). Home contacts with HBV carriers and/or recoverers gave only 342 cases (18.2%). Professional infections occurred in 117 medical workers (6.2%). At that time both voivodship had high hepatitis B morbidity ranging 91.7/100,000 in Piotrków voivodship in 1986 over two times higher than in the whole country (38.9/100,000).

Application of monoclonal antibody panels in the virological and epidemiological review of poliomyelitis in Poland, 1981-1990.

Monoclonal antibody panels developed to differentiate vaccine-derived and wild-type strains of polio-viruses were applied to isolates from cases of paralytic poliomyelitis, non-paralytic poliomyelitis, and healthy excreters of poliovirus from Poland. All isolates from poliomyelitis cases were shown to be vaccine-derived, as were most other strains. However, two strains associated with meningitis had wild-type antigenic phenotypes and, as shown by partial genomic sequencing, wild-type genotypes. Correlation of laboratory and epidemiological data suggested that residual cases of paralytic poliomyelitis in Poland between 1981 and 1990 were vaccine-related. Study of the non-paralytic cases, however, helped identify the circulation of endemic wild-type viruses in a well-vaccinated community.
