[Development of ulcerative colitis in a male patient during exacerbation of Reiter's syndrome symptoms].

Three years observation of a male patient was presented, who manifested Reiter's syndrome with two relapses of the disease, associated with the typical triad of symptoms (acute arthritis, conjunctivitis, urethritis). Both relapses were accompanied by diarrhoea. In course the first relapse skin lesions were observed on both shanks, diagnosed as erythema nodosum. Complex studies on diarrhoea, performed during the first relapse, failed to doxycyclin and diclofenac. During the second relapse of Reiter's syndrome the diarrhoea was diagnosed to result from co-existing colitis ulcerosa. Serum titers of Chlamydia trachomatis antibodies were low during relapse, increased during patient's recovery and persisted at the high during asymptomatic period. High titers of such antibodies were noted also in the serum of the patient's wife in whom neither anamnesis nor physical examination could demonstrate any pathology.

[Magnetic resonance tomography (MRT) and computed tomography (CT) of bronchial carcinoma. Comparison of the value of both study methods for preoperative staging].

Fifty patients with histologically proven bronchial carcinomas were examined by CT and MRT for preoperative T-staging and N-staging. CT and MRT provided the same classification in 87% of the T2 tumours, 78% of T3, 71% of N0, 74% of N1 and 100% of N2 tumours. MRT had advantages for demonstrating tumours at the apices, for central tumours and for demonstrating hilar and some mediastinal lymph node enlargement. CT was better at demonstrating small pulmonary metastases, small basal pleural effusions and also in showing pulmonary structure and bone lesions.

Uptake of 3H-testosterone in the skin of healthy women and in the skin of patients with acne vulgaris.

Skin samples of interscapular region were taken from healthy women and patients with Acne vulgaris. The material was incubated with 3H-testosterone. The incubation of a part of the material was preceeded by an incubation with the unlabelled testosterone. An autoradiography was employed to detect and localize an uptake of 3H-testosterone in the skin. A significantly greater 3H-testosterone uptake was noted in the stratum basale and stratum spinosum of epidermis, sebaceous glands and hair sheaths and, in patients with Acne vulgaris, also within hair sacs and comedons.

Blunt maternal trauma: a review of 103 cases.

One hundred three pregnant women hospitalized following blunt trauma had injuries classified as: major (20%); minor (17%); or significant (63%). Maternal mortality related only to the severity of maternal injuries: 24% of women who sustained major injuries died. Pregnancy ended unsuccessfully in 18% of all women with known pregnancy outcome. The incidence of unsuccessful pregnancy was 61% following major injuries and 27% following minor injuries. Insignificant maternal injuries did not affect pregnancy outcome. Fetal survival did not relate to gestational age per se. Pregnancy uniformly ended unsuccessfulla in the presence of maternal death, placental injury, uterine injury, and direct fetal injury, and occurred in 80% of women admitted in hemorrhagic shock. An understanding of the ways that the anatomic and physiologic changes of pregnancy alter the nature and frequency of maternal injuries and that maternal response to injury is altered is essential. The best chance for fetal survival is to assure maternal survival.

Diagnostic peritoneal lavage for blunt trauma in pregnant women.

Twelve pregnant women underwent diagnostic peritoneal lavage for suspected blunt abdominal trauma. Peritoneal lavage was both safe and accurate. The lavage was negative in four patients. Two of these patients survived without clinical evidence of abdominal injuries. The absence of abdominal injuries was confirmed at autopsy in the two patients who subsequently died. Peritoneal lavage was positive for hemoperitoneum in eight patients. All eight had significant abdominal injuries.
