Release of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) from the medio-basal hypothalamus induced by electroacupuncture in conscious female rabbits.

In electroacupuncture (EA) treatment, successful induction of ovulation is usually accompanied with the facilitation of pulsatile secretion of gonadotropin. The present work studied the release of GnRH from the mediobasal hypothalamus (MBH) using push-pull perfusion technique in conscious New Zealand female rabbits before, during and after EA stimulation. EA (4Hz, 5mA, 30 min) of Guanyuan (Ren 4), Zhongji (Ren 3), bilateral Sanyinjiao (SP 6) and Zigong (Extra 16) was given at the end of the 1st, 3rd and 5th hour during 6 hours' perfusion (EA group, n = 6). Cupric acetate (CuAC) was given (1%, 0.9 ml, i.v.) at the end of the 1st hour perfusion (CuAC group, n = 5) as a control since it is known as a stimulant for the release of GnRH. Rabbits in the control group (n = 4) were under the same perfusion condition except with no CuAC injection or EA stimulation. It was found that GnRH level was elevated immediately and significantly (4.64 +/- 0.98 v.s. 2.08 +/- 0.01 pg/ml, P < 0.05) after EA stimulation. In the CuAC group, GnRH level was also significantly elevated (3.84 +/- 0.37 v.s. 2.08 +/- 0.001 pg/ml, P < 0.05) one hour after CuAC injection. In addition, corpus lutein were observed both in the EA group (2/6) and the CuAC group (5/5). No similar changes were found in the control group. The data suggest that EA is capable of facilitating GnRH release from the MBH.

PISA--a noninvasive method in the evaluation of protective effect of methylprednisolone on the ischemic myocardium.

This study deals with the assessment of the PISA--a new noninvasive method, in relation to conventional ECG, MBCPK and LDH1, in the detection and quantification of coronary ligation-induced myocardial damage. Also this study includes the applicability of the PISA method in the evaluation of the effectiveness of methylprednisolone in the protection of myocardial damage, induced by coronary ligation. The studies were conducted in 15 mongrel dogs: (untreated dogs: 9; methylprednisolone (30 mg/kg I.V.) treated dogs: 6). The PISA signature pattern was normal and the PISA index was small in all the dogs before coronary ligation. The PISA signature was phase-variant in all dogs in the untreated group following coronary ligation. The PISA index increased with time following coronary ligation but the changes at 60 minutes were less than at 30 and 120 minutes. There were no significant changes in the conventional ECG, serum MBCPK and LDH1 for the 120 minute duration of coronary ligation. These results indicate the superiority of the PISA method in the detection and quantification of coronary artery ligation-induced myocardial damage. Coronary ligation in methylprednisolone treated dogs produced significant increases in the PISA index with the time but the increases were significantly lower than those in untreated groups. These lower increases at 60 minutes as compared to 30 and 120 minutes observed in the untreated group were absent in the treated group. Methylprednisolone showed some protective effect against coronary ligation-induced myocardial damage. These results indicate that the PISA method may be a valuable tool in the detection and the measurement of the extent of cardiac injury and in constant monitoring of the changes in the size of myocardial damage.

Congenital isolated absence of pulmonary valve in a neonate with partial trisomy 13q.

A term female newborn with partial trisomy 13q [46,XX, -18, +der(18) t(13;18) (13qter-->13q22:: 18q23--> 18pter) pat], is described with unbalanced translocation and isolated absence of the pulmonary valve. The clinical manifestations included hypertelorism, corneal opacification, high arch palate, rocker-bottom feet, polydactyly (both hands and feet), respiratory distress and intractable congestive heart failure. Echocardiogram showed isolated absent pulmonary valve. This consents report such a combination in partial chromosome 13 trisomy.

Shone's anomaly: report of one case.

A two-month-old female infant presented with intractable congestive heart failure and cyanosis, present since the neonatal period. The echocardiogram and angiogram showed a parachute mitral valve, aortic and subaortic stenosis, perimembranous type ventricular septal defect, mild aortic coarctation and patent ductus arteriosus. Unfortunately, the patient expired two days after surgical angioplasty for coarctation of the aorta. The autopsy proved a typical case of Shone's anomaly.
