Collagen analysis of articular cartilage and subchondral bone was performed on femoral heads obtained from patients of late stage of aseptic necrosis (ANF) (4 cases), and osteoarthritis (OA) (7 cases). In articular cartilage of both diseases, there was not observed any difference in the solubility of collagen compared with normal articular cartilage. However, collagen contents determined by hydroxyproline analysis showed a decrease in both diseases; this tendency was prominent in OA. On the other hand, copper contents showed an increase in ANF while there was a decrease in OA; the fact may suggest that lysyl oxidase acts actively on the formation of a precursor of cross-links in collagen matrix of articular cartilage in ANF. In subchondral bone of both diseases, collagen contents showed an increase in OA, and a decrease in ANF compared with normal subchondral bone. However the solubility of collagen has increased in both diseases. Moreover, lysine hydroxylation and copper contents showed an increase in both OA and ANF; these findings suggest that repairing reaction of the pathological lesion by proliferation of undifferentiated tissue remained even in late stage of the disease. In this paper, the author also discussed about the connective tissue metabolism of these two diseases by determination the types of collagen molecules of pathological cartilage and bone.

A case of isolated dislocation of the pisiform is reported. Repositioning by open reduction and temporary internal fixation was performed. However, redislocation of the pisiform occurred. Subsequently, removal of the dislocated pisiform bone resulted in good long-term function.
Sixty-eight children with contracture of the deltoid muscle (82 shoulders) were treated operatively. These cases showed a minimum angle of 25 degrees of abduction in the resting position. The postoperative course with a minimum follow-up of 5 years was analyzed in 40 cases (49 shoulders). Abduction contracture of the shoulder joint completely disappeared after surgery in 23 shoulders (47%), and winging of the scapula disappeared in 39 shoulders (78%). The angle of horizontal adduction was restored in 14 shoulders (41%) postoperatively. Contracture recurred in only three shoulders (6%).
Free-running blood corticosterone rhythms were examined between the 4th and 9th postnatal week in blinded rat pups optically enucleated on day 1. The pups were born of mother rats having a free-running rhythm under constant illumination conditions and then were put under two separate illumination conditions (light - dark cycle and dark - light cycle) under the care of foster mothers already synchronized to each respective condition. Despite being born of the same mother rat, when the pups were raised by a mother with a different rhythm from that of the natural mother, they showed a different phase from that of the pups raised by the natural mother. Furthermore, each possessed different phase angles, depending on the rhythm of their respective foster mothers. On the other hand, although the rhythm of the natural mothers differed, when the rhythms of the nursing mothers were the same after birth, the blinded pups showed similar phase angles during the observation periods. These data suggested that the blinded pups were not affected by the rhythm of the natural mothers but rather showed a phase angle in accordance with the rhythm of the nursing mother.
The effect of melatonin, para-chlorophenyl alanine (PCPA), gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) and dibutyryl-cAMP (d-cAMP) on the photoentrainment of the circadian adrenocortical rhythm was studied by the intrahypothalamic (near the SCN) implantation of a paraffin pellet mixed with each agent, in the rat. 2 weeks after implantation, the rats were moved to a room with a reversed lighting cycle (from LD to DL). Blood samples were taken from individual rats at 4-hour intervals for 24 h, and 2, 4, 6 and 10 days after movement, by the tail tip incision method. The effects of implantation of PCPA, GABA and d-cAMP on the reentrainment to the illumination cycle reversed were indistinguishable from those due to implantation of a pellet of paraffin alone. In these groups, more than half of the rats did not reentrain to the light cycle reversed in 4 (less than 18.1%) and 6 days (less than 36.3%), but did reentrain in 10 days. However, melatonin caused reentrainment of the circadian adrenocortical rhythm to reversed illumination between 4 (45.4%) and 6 days (72.7%). Pinealectomized rats receiving a melatonin pellet also exhibited an accelerated reentrainment to the light cycle reversed, when compared with the rat which received a pellet of paraffin alone. However, pinealectomized rats which received a pellet of paraffin alone did not require more time than intact rats to reentrain to the light cycle reversed. These results indicate that melatonin accelerates the reentrainment of the circadian adrenocortical rhythm to the light cycle reversed.

A case of microscopic polyangiitis (MPA) with pachymeningitis is described. The patient had renal, skin, gallbladder and peripheral nervous system involvement, simultaneously with pachymeningitis. Necrotizing glomerulonephritis with crescent formation, and necrotizing small vessel vasculitis in the kidney and skin were confirmed by biopsy. A highly elevated titer of antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibody for myeloperoxidase (MPO-ANCA) was observed. All of the clinical and laboratory abnormalities improved with high-dose pulse and conventional steroid therapy. The literature on central nervous system involvement in MPA and perinuclear-ANCA (p-ANCA)-related vasculitis is reviewed. This case serves to emphasize that pachymeningitis can occur as one of the features of MPA.
