Interaction between licking and swallowing in the drinking rat.

Licking behavior of rats appeared to be interrupted periodically for about 20 ms. Behavioral and electrophysiological evidence is presented which indicates that during this period swallowing occurs. The hypothesis was tested that swallowing initiation depends on the volume of water that has accumulated in the oral cavity during drinking. No support for this hypothesis was obtained when the flow rate of water through the drinking tube was manipulated. Alternative hypotheses are discussed.

Hen's egg yolk cholinesterase. Purification, characterization and comparison with hen's liver and blood plasma cholinesterase.

The cholinesterase (acylcholine acylkhydrolase, EC 3.1.1.8) of chicken egg yolk was partly purified and characterized. It was compared to homologous enzymes of liver and blood plasma of laying hens. During gel filtration, yolk and liver cholinesterase were resolved into two fractions. Blood plasma cholinesterase showed one form only, identical with yolk and liver cholinesterase 1 *** (EC 3.1.1.8). This form has an Mr of 440 000 and may be a tetramer of a cholinesterase form present in yolk and liver (Mr 104 000). Substrate specificity, pH optima, Km values, the influence of effectors (ammonium derivatives, choline, eserine, fluoride), gel filtration, gel electrophoresis, isoelectric focusing and affinity chromatography, all point to a very close similarity, if not identity, of the corresponding forms.

Speech intelligibility in noisy environments with one- and two-microphone hearing aids.

In this study speech intelligibility in background noise was evaluated with 10 binaural hearing-aid users for hearing aids with one omnidirectional microphone and a hearing aid with a two-microphone configuration (enabling an omnidirectional as well as a directional mode). Signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) measurements were carried out for three different types of background noise (speech-weighted noise, traffic noise and restaurant noise) and two kinds of speech material (bisyllabic word lists and sentences). The average SNR improvement of the directional microphone configuration relative to the omnidirectional one was 3.4 dB for noise presented from 90 degrees azimuth. This improvement was independent of the specific type of noise and speech material, indicating that one speech-in-noise condition may yield enough relevant information in the evaluation of directional microphones and speech understanding in noise.

A multicentre study on the efficacy and safety of individualized dosage of haloperidol (Haldol) in refractory chronic psychotics.

This study was carried out on 38 chronic refractory psychotic patients who received partial multimodal treatment with individually adapted doses of Haldol. The study was based on: --Howard's experiences: more than half of his chronic psychotic patients were able to leave the State Hospital because of the multimodal treatment with high individualized doses of Haldol; -Paquay and Tanghe's experiences: one-fourth to more than one-half of their chronic refractory patients showed remarkable improvement with a partial multimodal treatment. This study shows that improvement is obtained in more than 2 out of 3 cases, thus proving that the best results are obtained when an adequate selection of the patients is made. As side-effects, above all, the extrapyramidal symptoms are possible. However, their frequency and intensity are not higher than those provoked by other incisive neuroleptics or conventional doses of Haldol. Special attention should be given to any pseudodepression or neurovegetative reactions. The individualization of the doses should be carefully done.

A six-month follow-up of refractory chronic psychotics treated with Haldol-AID.

Nine refractory chronic psychotics were switched to a lower dosage of, mostly, a long-acting diphenylbutylpiperidine after having been treated with high initial and maintenance doses of Haldol. This switch-over was rated as very good in three patients (allocation to nursing family) and good in two patients on fluspirilene (Imap); it was also rated as good in one patient on fluphenazine decanoate and one on pipamperone. One patient could discontinue neuroleptic treatment. One was rated as a failure. A switch-over is not always easy as it is a time of trial and error. A switch-over to a parenteral diphenylbutylpiperidine offers good prospectives. As a rule, further improvement is feasible after a period of Haldol medication. It seems that the advantages of a maintenance therapy with Imap are its lack of inconveniences for the patient (not sedative, only slightly hypokinetic) and its good antipsychotic and adequately prolonged activity 2 weeks).
