Verbal memory deficits associated with major affective disorders: a comparison of unipolar and bipolar patients.

The verbal learning and fluency of patients with unipolar and bipolar depression were compared to those of normal controls and patients with Huntington's disease. The data demonstrated that the recall and recognition performance of both groups of depressed patients were impaired relative to the performance of normal control subjects. The bipolar patients, however, were more impaired than the unipolar patients on both tasks (P less than 0.024 and P less than 0.022, respectively). In addition, the unipolar patients generated more correct responses on a test of verbal fluency (P less than 0.04). The performance of the bipolar patients was, in fact, similar to that of patients with Huntington's disease, a progressive degenerative disorder that primarily affects subcortical areas.

Effects of in utero administration of phenobarbital on gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase.

The present study was undertaken to determine the effects of the in utero administration of phenobarbital (Pb) on gamma glutamyl transpeptidase (gamma-GTP) in rats. Female Wistar rats were bred to healthy adult males. On day 1 of gestation (evidenced by spermatozoa from vaginal smear) the pregnant rats were given 100 mg/kg phenobarbital (as the sodium salt) daily via the BioServ Liquid diet throughout gestation. Pair-fed controls were given the same volume of food as consumed by the experimental group. The offspring were sacrificed at birth and body, brain and liver weights determined. The pups born to the Pb treated mothers weighed significantly less than those born to the control mothers (4.77 and 6.60 g respectively). The brains and livers were homogenized in Tris buffered saline and assayed for gamma-GTP activity. Brain gamma-GTP activity was found to be 0.00807 u in the Pb group and 0.00670 u in the control group. We also examined the effects of chronic administration of Pb in adult rats and found no apparent effect on liver or brain gamma-GTP activity.

Salmeterol powder compared with albuterol aerosol as maintenance therapy for asthma in adolescent and adult patients.

Two multicenter, randomized, double-masked, placebo-controlled studies involving 451 adolescent and adult patients with mild-to-moderate asthma compared the efficacy and safety of salmeterol powder 50 micrograms twice daily with albuterol 180 micrograms four times daily or placebo (with albuterol as needed) for 12 weeks. Patients had forced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV1) of 50% to 80%. Throughout the 12-week treatment period, the mean change from baseline in percentage of predicted FEV1 was significantly greater with salmeterol than with placebo; mean area under the curve for FEV1 was significantly greater with salmeterol than with albuterol or placebo. Significant improvements in morning and evening peak expiratory flow, percentage of nights without awakening, and asthma symptoms were observed with salmeterol. Salmeterol was well tolerated, and no clinically significant changes in electrocardiographic activity were observed.

Temporal diversity in the lateral geniculate nucleus of cat.

Reverse correlation was used in conjunction with ternary white noise to estimate the first-order spatiotemporal receptive-field structure of LGN cells in the anesthetized, paralyzed cat. Based on a singular-value decomposition of these data, we conclude that most LGN cells are approximately space-time separable. An analysis of the timecourses of the first singular values revealed a strongly bimodal but continuous distribution of rise times and waveforms. The two modes represented cells generally associated with the lagged and nonlagged classes of Mastronarde (1987a,b), and this was confirmed by their responses to step and sine-modulated spots in their field centers. The intermediate cells, rather than appearing to constitute a separate group, smoothly filled the region between the obviously lagged and nonlagged cells in every respect. These conclusions are limited to X-cells although the data from a much smaller population of Y-cells conform to the same scheme. We conclude that lagged and nonlagged cells represent the modes of a continuous and very broad distribution of temporal responses in the cat LGN.

Complex abdominal aortic aneurysm repair.

ascular surgery is a challenging discipline and complex aneurysms can present an entire range of technical difficulties. To overcome these problems good technical skills are mandatory. However, it is also worth remembering a few basic rules: The simplest solution is often the best. All cases need careful planning, including that of the approach. A successful anastomosis requires good aortic tissue. Minimal dissection reduces morbidity.

Relationship of psychiatric status to Gulf War veterans' health problems.

OBJECTIVE: A growing body of research has shown that there are important links between certain psychiatric disorders and health symptom reporting. Two disorders in particular (posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and major depression) have been the most widely implicated to date, and this association has sometimes been used to explain the occurrence of ill-defined medical problems and increased somatic symptoms in certain groups, most recently Gulf War veterans. METHODS: Structured psychiatric diagnostic interviews were used to examine the presence of major psychiatric (axis I) disorders and their relation to health symptom reporting in a well-characterized, stratified subset of Gulf War veterans and a non-Gulf-deployed veteran comparison group. RESULTS: Rates of most psychiatric disorders were substantially lower than national comorbidity estimates, consistent with prior studies showing heightened physical and emotional well-being among active-duty military personnel. Rates of PTSD and major depression, however, were significantly elevated relative to the veteran comparison group. The diagnosis of PTSD showed a small but significant association with increased health symptom reports. However, nearly two-thirds of Gulf participants reporting moderate to high health symptoms had no axis I psychiatric diagnosis. CONCLUSIONS: Results suggest that rates of psychiatric illness were generally low with the exception of PTSD and major depression. Although PTSD was associated with higher rates of reported health problems, this disorder did not entirely account for symptoms reported by participants. Factors other than psychiatric status may play a role in Gulf War health problems.

Nuclear death in living Tetrahymena: the case of the haploid nuclei.

During sexual conjugation in Tetrahymena the micronucleus divides meiotically, producing four haploid nuclei. While one of these nuclei divides mitotically to yield two genetically identical gametic pronuclei, a stationary pronucleus and a migratory pronucleus, the remaining three haploid nuclei degenerate and disappear. Typically, they migrate to the posterior end of the cell where they remain as residual bodies until they disappear. In the present study we asked whether degenerating haploid nuclei share any properties with apoptotic nuclei. Specifically, we wondered whether they would be stained by "apofluor", a combination of vital fluorescent indicators that differentially stains apoptotic nuclei in living cells. "Apofluor" includes acridine orange, which becomes trapped in acidic compartments and stains lysosomal bodies a brilliant orange-red, and Hoechst 33342, which binds to DNA and stains nuclei bright blue. With this dye combination, while ordinary nuclei stain blue, the apoptotic macronucleus stains first blue-green, then yellow, and finally orange. The progression in color is presumed to be due to the accumulation of protons in the apoptotic nucleus compartment. We found that three of the four post-meiotic haploid nuclei, those that are eliminated, were stained differentially green, then yellow, and then come to be indistinguishable from the orange lysosomal bodies. Differential staining can occur even while the nuclei are located at the anterior ends of the cells, and before the "viable" nucleus divides to form pronuclei. These results indicate that haploid nuclei in the process of degradation are differentially stained in living cells by "apofluor", and that the differential staining occurs early in the elimination process. Further, since the degenerating haploid nuclei are stained by "apofluor" it is likely that they are degraded by a mechanism similar to the elimination of the apoptotic macronucleus.

Irreducible dislocation of the great toe following a sports injury. A case report.

The increasing number of competitive and recreational athletes has resulted in more sports-related foot injuries. An understanding of the sesamoid anatomy of the foot will facilitate management of these injuries. We recommend use of the dorsal approach in the surgical treatment of irreducible interphalangeal dislocations.

A preliminary report of mortality patterns among foundry workers.

A proportional mortality study was conducted utilizing the death records maintained from 1971 to 1975 by the International Molders and Allied Workers Union as part of a death benefits program. Death certificates were obtained on 3,013 members of the study group and classified according to the 8th Revision of the ICA by a trained nosologist. The ate- and race-specific cause distribution of all deaths among males in the United States for 1973 were used as a standard from which expected deaths were calculated. The statistical significance of differences between observed and expected numbers of deaths was determined by a chi-square test. The most statistically significant finding in this study was an excess lung cancer mortality (208 observed vs. 142 expected) and an excess mortality due to pneumoconiosis (29 observed vs. 5 expected). A discussion is included of the potential agents found in the foundry environment that may be responsible for the increased lung cancer risk.
