Human cell hybrids derived from malignant HeLa and normal fibroblast parental cells expressed many of the transformed properties of the HeLa parent but their tumor-producing capability was suppressed. Hybrids derived from HeLa/HeLa fusions retained both their transformed and malignant phenotypes. Thus, an apparent separation of the control of the transformed versus malignant phenotype is indicated. Furthermore, several transformed properties--including lack of density-dependent inhibition of growth, lectin agglutination, lowered requirement for serum growth factors, and anchorage independence--are expressed coordinately in the nontumorigenic hybrids. This finding suggests that none of these properties by themselves, or in concert, endows a cell with tumorigenic potential.
An operation for arthrodesis of the first metatarsophalangeal joint described previously has been performed on 85 toes in 68 patients over a 20-year period. The notes and X-rays have been reviewed to determine the incidence of bony fusion and to find out whether the operative position was maintained until union occurred. Arthrodesis was achieved in 83 (97.6 per cent) of the toes operated on. Where there had been no previous surgery to the metatarsophalangeal joint the incidence of bony union was 100 per cent. As determined by certain defined criteria there is a strong indication that the technique maintained the operative position until bony union occurred.

Glucuronidation of oestrone and of oestradiol in microsomal fractions was markedly and significantly stimulated by UDP-N-acetylglucosamine and by ultrasonication: Triton X-100 also stimulated. This is consistent with compartmentation of UDP-glucuronyl-transferase. Stimulation by UDP-N-acetylglucosamine may be physiologically significant.

The gastric acid secreted per unit of serum gastrin concentration or per unit of gastrin delivered to the gastric mucosa was significantly greater during electrical vagal stimulation than during stimulation by meat extract in the pyloric antrum. There was no significant difference in the concentrations of big, big gastrin or Components I and II in gastric venous serum during the two forms of stimulation. There were significantly greater concentrations of Components II and IV in gastric venous serum during meat extract stimulation than during vagal stimulation. The gastrin in gastric venous serum when meat extract was in the pyloric antrum was comprised of Component IV in addition to Component III whereas gastrin in extracts of cat antral mucosa was predominantly Component III. Gastric acid secretion in response to vagal stimulation was greater than can be accounted for by the action of gastrin alone and cannot be explained by differences in the known gastrin variants in the circulation during the two forms of stimulation.
Thirty-one patients have been reviewed four and a half to thirteen years after total excision of the patella for fracture. This operation did not give the uniformly excellent results previously reported by some authors. The type of incision used was unimportant in the long term. Immobilisation in plaster-of-Paris for any period between one and eight weeks after operation had no adverse effect on the long-term results. There was no correlation between the amount of calcification or ectopic bone formation found in the patellar tendon and the degree of function or discomfort in the joint. There was no evidence that osteoarthritis is an inevitable sequel to patellectomy in man. Maximal recovery of knee function may take up to three years after patellectomy. In this series 22% of patients had excellent results, 39% good results and 39% poor results, according to defined criteria. The implications of these findings are discussed.
To assess the extent of the acetylation of procainamide (PA) to N-acetylprocainamide (NAPA) in man, and its relation to isonicotinic acid hydrazide (INH) acetylation phenotype, the following study was done. Fourteen subjects received 500 mg of PA - HCL orally. INH acetylation phenotype was determined by the serum half-life of INH after 4 mg/kg of INH orally. Each urine voided for 96 hr after procainamide was saved and levels of procainamide and NAPA measured by gas-liquid chromatography. The 14 subjects eliminated 52 plus or minus 4 percent of the dose as procainamide and 16 plus or minus 2 percent of the dose as NAPA. Four fast INH acetylators eliminated 23 plus or minus 3 percent of the dose as NAPA compared to 12 plus or minus 1 percent by the slow acetylators (p smaller than 0.05). The amount of unaltered procainamide excreted by the fast and slow INH acetylators was not significantly different, 50 plus or minus 4 percent and 53 plus or minus 4 percent, respectively. Of the total amount of drug recovered in the urine of the fast and slow INH acetylators, NAPA accounted for 32 percent and 19 percent, respectively (p smaller than 0.01). There appears to be a positive correlation between the ability to acetylate INH and the ability to acetylate procainamide.
Certain otherwise well-definedHL-Atyping sera contain extra antibodies which do not appear to be closely related to known HL-A specificites and which react in the cytotoxic test with chronic lymphaticleukemia lymphocytes but not with normal lymphocytes. Despite nonreactivity in thecytotoxic test, absorption studies show that the antigenic factors are well represented onnormal lymphocytes. Based on cross-absorption experiments using both normal andleukemic cells, followed by back-testing with the cytotoxic test against a leukemiccell panel, evidence is presented suggesting the existence of a complex, probablymultiple allelic system on human lymphoid cells which appears distinct from the, HL-Asystem, and is definable by serologic techniques.
