Stereology: a new quantitative morphological method to study epididymal function.

Stereology is a method to obtain quantitative information of structural changes at the light and electron microscopic level. The basic principles of stereology are outlined below. This paper shows how stereologic techniques can be used to obtain structural data from histologic and electron micrographs of intact tissue and cells. A stereologic model, which provides information on the structure of the epididymis has been developed for the rat epididymal head. The model consists of morphologically defined space and membrane compartments of the rat epididymal head and the principal cells. The alterations, induced in the principal cell of the epididymal head after long term hypophysectomy were studied by electron microscopy. The results presented are relative to a cubic centimeter of epididymal tissue, a cubic centimeter of principal cells and principal cell cytoplasm. An attempt to relate stereologic and biochemical data is shown.

[Diagnostic value of thermography and Tc 99m bleomycin scintigraphy for nodules of the thyroid (author's transl)].

The combined interest of thermography and 99mTc Bleomycin scintigraphy in the differential diagnosis of a cold thyroid nodule was evaluated in 86 patients. In all cases a histological examination was performed. Of the 30 malignant nodules (clinically suspect and solitary nodules) 21 (70%) showed concentrations of 99mTc Bleomycin while only 7 of the 12 solitary malignant nodules did so. Among the 54 benign nodules the false positive rate was 54%. Thermography was positive in 26 (87%) of the 30 malignant nodules and in only 8 (67%) of the 12 solitary malignant nodules. For the 54 benign nodules the false positive rate was 72%. The combined results of the study do not provide any improvement in diagnostic accuracy. Thus it can be said that applications of 99mTc Bleomycin and thermography in the diagnosis of solitary hypofixiant nodules are of limited value.

Seroprevalence of measles- and rubella-specific antibodies among military recruits, Canada, 1991.

A study of the seroprevalence of measles- and rubella-specific antibodies among military recruits in Canada in 1991 was undertaken to: 1) determine the proportion of military recruits who are measles and/or rubella seropositive when they enter the military; 2) detect general problems in the immune coverage in the young adult population; and 3) determine the proportion of measles seronegativity attributable to non-response, waning immunity or lack of exposure to either the disease or the vaccine. One initial blood sample was collected from all 399 recruits enrolled in basic training during the month of January 1991, prior to immunization with measles-mumps-rubella vaccine (MMR). Another sample was obtained from 354 of these recruits 3 to 5 weeks following this immunization. Only 18 (4.5%) recruits had negative measles-specific neutralization on the first sample. Only 12 (3.0%) recruits had negative measles-specific EIA on the first sample. All recruits had neutralization titres 40 or higher on the second sample. A total of 43 (10.8%) individuals had negative results for rubella EIA before immunization, 35 of which (81.4%) tested positive on the second sample.

[Comparative analysis of distribution of mutant alleles of the gene coding for the CCR-5 chemokine receptor, among people in Russia, infected and not infected with HIV-1].

Comparative analysis of the distribution of deletion mutations of CC-chemokine receptor 5 (CCR-5) gene among HIV-1 infected and not infected subjects in Russia showed the incidence of the heterozygous genotype to be 17.8% among both HIV-infected and seronegative subjects. The incidence of the homozygous genotype for the deletion among seronegative individuals was 0.6%, but no homozygotes were found among HIV-1 infected patients. Study of the incidence of the mutant CCR-5 allele among patients infected with different HIV-1 subtypes showed that the susceptibility of heterozygotes to HIV-1 infection was not associated with any special genetic subtype.
