The application of prolonged EEG telemetry and videotape recording to the study of seizures and related disorders.

The clinical application of prolonged monitoring by the combined EEG and videotape recording of patients was evaluted. This test was found to be useful in diagnosing epileptic seizures in patients in whom both the history and diurnal EEG studies were unhelpful, and it assisted with the accurate classification of seizure types. It enabled seizure focus lateralisation in medically intractable epileptic who were being evaluated for surgery, and it also provided an objective estimate of minor seizure frequency. Prolonged EEG telemetry and videotape recording was especially useful in assessing additional seizures that develop in known epileptics. In some patients with syncope and drop attacks this technique helped to exclude atonic epileptic seizures and intermittent cardiac tachy-brady-arrhythmia as the underlying cause. As a method for identifying sleep disorders it has greater merits than conventional methods of polygraphic recordings.

Kinetics of net RNA degradation during development in Dictyostelium discoideum.

Based on dry weight, first-order kinetics adequately describe the net decrease of RNA in Dictyostelium discoideum NC-4 until culmination, when a cessation of RNA degradation occurs. Between aggregation and sorocarp formation, the cells lose 40% of their RNA, or 19 mM-glucose equivalents expressed in terms of cell volume at aggregation. In sorocarps the spores contain a disproportionately large amount of RNA. Net RNA contents in sorocarps and in spores are unaffected by the availability of exogenous glucose. The relationship of dry weight, cell number and packed cell volume during differentiation is given.

Acid secretion and serum gastrin at graded intragasric pressures in man.

In 16 healthy subjects, gastric distention was produced by infusion of 5% mannitol solution, pH 5.5. Constant intragastric pressure was maintained by use of a barostat. Over successive 1-hr periods the head of pressure was raised in 5-cm increments from an arbitrary zero point to 15 cm. Gastric acid secretion was measured by constant intragastric titration. Blood samples were obtained throughout the study for measurement of serum gastrin concentrations. When intragastric pressure was raised from zero to 5 cm H2O, gastric acid secretion increased significantly (24% of peak acid response to pentagastrin). Acid responses at 10 and 15 cm pressure were lower. Serum gastrin concentrations increased slightly at 15 cm pressure but not at 5 or 10 cm. There was no correlation between increments in serum gastrin and acid secretory rates. We conclude that gastric distention at low pressures stimulated acid secretion by a mechanism and did not involve increases in circulating gastrin concentrations. Slight increases in serum gastrin observed at the highest distending pressure were not associated with further increases in acid secretion.

A factor analysis of creativity in fraternal and identical twins.

The relationship between intelligence and creativity and their factorial structure have been extensively discussed, with little empirical evidence and less agreement as to the meaning. A study of 117 pairs of like sexed fraternal and identical twins was undertaken, with each twin participating in an extensive battery of creativity tests.A factor analysis indicated three factors for the fraternal twins and two for the identical twins, the results supporting both (a) the notion that the common variance of creativity measures may be accounted for by a general intelligence factor, and (b) the division of creativity into a verbal and a figural domain.

Recurrence of astrocytoma of optic nerve after 48 years.

A tumour presumed to be a juvenile glioma of the optic nerve was removed by a Kronlein procedure from a 4-year old boy in 1925. In 1973 a severe proptosis made it necessary to remove the atrophic eye and a large retro-ocular tumour. Histological examination, supported by electron microscopy, showed the second tumour to be an anaplastic pilocytic astrocytoma. The possible histogenesis and this unusual behaviour pattern are discussed.
