Neuron culture from adult goldfish.

Neurons and glia from the central nervous system of the adult teleost Carassius auratus have been grown as explant cultures of minced brain tissue and as trypsin dissociated cells. These cultures exhibit extensive neurite growth from two neuronal types, have organotypic ultrastructure, and contain electrically active cells. Autoradiographic data indicate that these neurons do not divide in culture, and histological evidence suggests that some mature neurons survive explantation and regenerate processes. However, explantation of brain fragments not containing undifferentiated cells, localized in the ventricular and subventricular zones in the brains of fish, resulted in mesenchymal and glial cell cultures only. Therefore, a contribution to the population of cells in culture by undifferentiated cells must be considered. The cultured neurons remained viable for at least 19 weeks and ultrastructural and electrophysiological data indicate synaptic interaction between cells in explant cultures.

Labour induction using buccal prostaglandin e2.

Prostaglandins may remain in the circulation for some two hours after oral therapy and any resultant hypertonus may be difficult to treat in these circumstances. Buccal administration based on the concept that tablets could be discarded should this occur, has been evaluated in 30 patients. Effective uterine stimulation occurred in 90% of subjects receiving a dose of 1mg hourly. No hypertonus occurred but two patients had a prolonged contraction on a single occasion during labour. The fact that the tablets dissolve rapidly and in addition produce an unpleasant buccal prostaglandins do not have advantages over alternative methods of oxytocic administration.

Buccal prostaglandin E2 for induction of labour.

The administration of buccal prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) was evaluated in 30 patients; effective uterine stimulation occurred in 90 per cent of those receiving a dose of 1 mg hourly. Two patients had a prolonged contraction on a single occasion during labour. The unpleasant taste of the tablets and a high incidence of nausea and vomiting indicated that buccal prostaglandins had no advantages over other methods of administering oxytocic agents.

The management of DES-exposed women: one physician's approach.

The female offspring of DES-treated mothers are examined cytologically and colposcopically annually, starting at the age of seven years no treatment is indicated until a colposcopic atypical transformation zone occurs. With its occurrence all the abnormal epithelium(squamous or columnar) is excised from the vagina and cervix under colposcopic guidance in the hospital or in the office under local anesthesia. The procedures are done in stages to minimize scarring and to eliminate the possibility of vaginal-cervical adhesions or vaginal shortening. The finding of an incidence of 47% of cervical or vaginal intraepithelial neoplasia in 34 patients aged 10 to 26 years so treated to date indicates a high risk of potential candidacy for squamous carcinoma of the vagina or cervix in later years.

Alzheimer degeneration in Down syndrome. Electrophysiologic alterations and histopathologic findings.

Progressive electroencephalographic disorganization and decreased voltage amplitude in the late components of the averaged visual evoked potentials were recorded in the last two years of life of a patient with Down disease and Alzheimer degeneration. Taken together with quantitative histopathologic findings, the electrophysiologic alterations are interpreted in terms of recent evidence from an experimental animal model of dementia. Neurons with neurofibrillary degeneration become electrically inactive and contribute to the loss of voltage generators associated with neuron death in Alzheimer disease. Loss of voltage generators may result in disfacillitation and disinhibition of surviving neurons, thus causing the loss of normal rhythms.

Elimination of the early inhibition of protein synthesis in Escherichia coli C3000 infected with purified R17 bacteriophage.

Infection of Escherichia coli with an R17 bacteriophage suspension has been reported to result in early and late phases of inhibition of host protein synthesis (Yamazaki, 1969; Watanabe and Watanabe, 1968). However, early inhibition was observed when cultures were inoculated with only tryptone broth, which is often used to suspend R17 bacteriophage. Since early inhibition was not observed when E. coli cultures were inoculated with R17 bacteriophage suspended in phosphate buffer, early inhibition is not an intrinsic feature of R17 phage infection.

The length of teacher contacts and students' off-task behavior.

This study investigated the relationship between a teacher's contact durations and the off-task behavior of students not in contact with the teacher. Contact durations were defined as the amount of time the teacher spent working individually with each student. Off-task behavior was recorded for six third-graders who comprised a small instructional group in mathematics. After baseline established that contact durations averaged approximately 38 sec, the teacher was instructed to hold contacts for at least 50 sec. During this phase, the students' off-task behavior increased. The teacher was then instructed to hold contacts for only 20 sec. During this phase, the students' off-task behavior decreased.
