Computed tomographic measurements of the nasal sinuses and frontal bone in mummy-heads artificially deformed in infancy.

The purpose of the present study was to ascertain whether artificial skull deformation, carried out during infancy, has an effect on the pneumatization of the frontal and maxillary sinuses and on the osseous structure of the frontal bone. Thus, two normal and 12 artificially deformed adult human skulls (12 males, two females) from the collection of pre-Columbian Peruvian skeletons and mummies in the Institute of Anthropology and Human Genetics (University of Munich) were investigated by computed tomography. These skulls had been excavated from four sites on the Peruvian coast: Las Trancas, Cahuachi. Pacatnamu, and Estaqueria. The volumes of the maxillary sinuses varied from 5.18 mL to 17.19 mL. Those of the frontal sinuses varied from zero to 6.21 mL. The artificial deformation of the skull, which occurred during infancy, had no influence on the size of the maxillary and frontal sinuses. There was also no difference in the average bone thickness of the os frontale; however, artificial deformation in infancy had an influence on the bone structure, resulting in a tremendous rarefication of the diploe of the frontal bones. Based on these findings we conclude that the various types of skull deformation instituted in infancy seem to exert no inhibitory effect on the pneumatization of either the frontal or maxillary sinuses.

Bovine seminal ribonuclease inhibits in vivo growth of human neuroblastoma cells.

Bovine seminal ribonuclease (BS-RNase) is a homologue of RNase A with specific antitumor activities. It is selectively toxic for neuroblastoma (NB) cells in vitro with no significant effects on the viability of normal human cells. We evaluated the antitumoral effects of BS-RNase on human NB xenografts from UKF-NB-3 cells in athymic (nude) mice. The efficacy of direct intraneoplastic, subcutaneous and systemic delivery of BS-RNase was explored. Systemic administration of BS-RNase (12.5 mg/kg/day intraperitoneally, for 20 days in the course of four weeks) suppressed tumor growth but was not able to induce any cures. Subcutaneous injections (12.5 mg/kg/day for 20 days in the course of four weeks) and intratumoral BS-RNase treatment using the same schedule resulted in complete tumor regression. During 30 days following cessation of treatment no tumor regrowth was observed and animals were free of tumors. Toxic effects of BS-RNase (e.g., on bone marrow and inner organs) were not apparent. This data indicates that BS-RNase fulfills important criteria for a candidate antitumor agent specific for NB.

[Protein utilization by premature infants with a birth weight less than 1,500 g during nutrition with MANASAN or breast milk protein].

Protein utilization in very low birth weight infants fed the formula MANASAN or human milk protein. The influence of protein utilization was studied in 19 very low birth weight infants appropriate for gestational age between the 5th and 6th week of postnatal life. 8 of the infants were fed with the formula MANASAN (protein: cow's milk casein) and 11 were fed with similar quantities of human milk (HM) protein (HM fortified with 6g freeze-dried HM/100 ml). On two following days the protein intake and the nitrogen excretion in urine and stools were measured and the nitrogen balance was calculated. In the urine the excretions of alpha-amino-nitrogen, urea, ammonium and sulfuric acid were also estimated. On one of both study days the concentrations of alpha-amino-nitrogen and urea were measured in the preprandially obtained serum. The weight gain was calculated as mean of two weeks ending with the last day of study. Despite the similar protein intakes and the sufficient energy intakes in both study groups the serum concentration of alpha-amino-nitrogen and the renal excretions of alpha-amino-nitrogen, ammonium and sulfuric acid were significantly higher in the groups fed MANASAN than in the groups fed HM protein. The excretion of ammonium in the urine was significantly correlated to the excretion of sulfuric acid. The weight gain and the nitrogen balance were significantly lower in the infants fed MANASAN in comparison to the infants fed HM protein.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

[Clinical, histological, and immunohistochemical studies of squamous cell carcinomas of the oral mucosa and the prolabium].

In diagnosing and monitoring squamous cell carcinomas of the oral mucosa and the prolabium the carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) is a frequently used tumor marker. In a pilot study six of these carcinomas with established pathological serum levels of CEA were clinically analyzed and immunohistochemically examined for the tumor antigens CEA and, in addition, TPA (tissue polypeptide antigen). Only in one case could a positive CEA reaction be found. In the same tumors TPA could not be demonstrated. It is concluded from these results that elevated CEA serum levels are no tumor specific reactions and that the use of this tumor marker is to be considered with criticism.

[Tinetti motor ability test: sensitivity to change in gait assessment during geriatric hospitalization--aspects of its clinical relevance and quality assurance].

Assessment instruments are recommended in addition to the clinical examination of gait disorders in elderly patients. We examined the sensitivity of gait assessment in a geriatric hospital by using a modified Tinetti's motility score in order to study aspects of clinical relevance and quality assurance. Forty patients were assessed on admission and discharge. The results were rated for information profit in comparison to clinical admission report. Three geriatricians rated the results for clinical relevance. Three quarters of the patients' mobility changed significantly on the course. There were no significant differences in patients with dementia. Assessment by using Tinetti's motility score gained 41% new information and 49% partly new information. This information was rated as considerably relevant to the clinical course in 56% to 80% of the patients. A structured motility score is useful for the purpose of internal quality assurance in a geriatric hospital.
