Baby bottle tooth decay in Native American children in Head Start centers.

Baby bottle tooth decay is a unique pattern of dental caries (tooth decay) affecting the dentition of young children. It is associated with the practice of putting the child to sleep with a nursing bottle filled with liquid that contains sugar. Practitioners who treat Native American children have noted that this population suffers from a high prevalence of the condition. In order to establish specific program priorities and treatment needs for this segment of the Native American population, additional information is required on both prevalence and severity of baby bottle tooth decay. In this survey, an overall prevalence of 70 percent was observed when Navajo and Cherokee Head Start students ages 4-5 years were examined. Of the children affected by baby bottle tooth decay, 87 percent displayed the most severe manifestation of the disease. The prevalence of this disease in these Native American children appears to be substantially higher than in other populations. Further study is needed to identify the factors contributing to this difference in prevalence and to identify effective measures for reducing the occurrence of baby bottle tooth decay among Native Americans.

An ultrastructural morphometric analysis of normal human mammary tissue and human breast cancer.

An ultrastructural morphometric study of normal and tumourous adult human mammary tissue is presented. The data show a characteristic numerical pattern for the different neoplastic stages of breast tissues. By applying a special data-comparison program a standardized diagnostic and prognostic system appears possible through the morphometric analysis of ultrathin epon sections of surgically obtained material.

MR imaging of intracranial cysticercosis: comparison with CT and anatomopathologic features.

Eight patients with neurocysticercosis were studied with CT and magnetic resonance (MR) imaging. Two cysts were shown better with MR than with CT. A conspicuous, high-intensity mural nodule containing the scolex allowed specific identification of intraventricular and parenchymal cysticerci. CT evidence of calcification and metrizamide enhancement in the nodule was also noted in one case. Racemose cysts were seen in the cerebellopontine angle and under the anterior septum pellucidum. Fluid in apparently live cysticerci and in racemose cysts had MR signal properties closely paralleling CSF. A thin subependymal or subpial rim of high signal intensity around the intraventricular and one of the racemose cysts was consistent with tissue reaction and aided diagnosis. While MR showed only one of numerous calcifications, it may be more sensitive than CT in the recognition of perifocal edema and of parenchymal and subarachnoid cysts, may replace invasive ventriculography in the diagnosis of intraventricular cysts, and may be useful in determining the viability of cysts and their response to therapy.

Ultrastructural localization of carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) on ultrathin cryosections of human tumours.

A new, more direct method for reliable localization of CEA on human tumours has been applied at the ultrastructural level. Freshly prepared biopsy material from breast and gastric tumours, as well as xenografted colon tumours from mice, and a colon tumour cell line (LS 174 T), were briefly fixed in glutaraldehyde and frozen in liquid propane. Ultrathin cryosections were labelled with monospecific CEA antibodies by applying gold-coupled second antibodies. Variations in the labelling patterns were found when comparing breast, colon, and gastric cancers. Apart from breast tumours, all other samples reveal significant extracellular CEA positivity on the cell membrane. Intracellular localization has been found on the endoplasmic reticulum, nuclear membrane, and, in breast tumours, on electron dense bodies. These investigations confirm our previous experimental results using preembedding labelling techniques before Epon inclusion.
