[An anademy of ictero-hemorrhagic leptospirosis in a military group in Algeria (author's transl].

Seven cases of L.I.H. are noted simultaneously in a military group in the suburbs of Algier. It is an anademic by contamination at the same point, without interhuman infection. Only two of these cases have clinical symptoms to permit diagnosis of the others by research of specific antibodies (Immunodiagnosis). Anicteric forms are very frequent. This explains probably failure of diagnosis when epidemiological conditions are realized. This unawareness of leptospiroses is unfortunately a general phenomenon in the world.

Comparison of microenvironmental CO concentrations in two cities for human exposure modeling.

The microenvironmental components of the CO concentration in two cities are compared by subtracting the ambient background concentration from personal exposures measured in Denver, Colorado, and Washington, DC. Two surrogate measures for the ambient background concentration are tested. Both improve the similarity of the means in the two cities, but the Denver standard deviations are higher than those in Washington, DC. Microenvironments containing the internal combustion engine have both higher means and standard deviations in Denver compared with Washington, DC. The Washington, DC, mean concentration for automobiles, for example, was 59% of the Denver mean (2.0 ppm versus 4.9 ppm). Washington, DC, had approximately 57% of the Denver emissions, and the difference in mean CO concentrations is roughly consistent with the lower emissions in Washington, DC, due to lower elevation. A surprising finding is that mean CO exposure levels caused by cooking with gas stoves in Washington, DC, were only 58% of the levels in Denver (1.9 ppm and 3.3 ppm, respectively). This result suggests that elevation may exert an influence on gas stove emissions that is similar to its influence on internal combustion engines. Using an averaging time model, analysis of the autocorrelation of sleeping and office microenvironments suggests that considerable serial dependency exists. The microenvironmental data and findings in this paper have important implications for constructing human exposure-activity pattern models. For future human exposure field studies, the findings emphasize the importance of measuring background values in a location that is extremely close to each microenvironment studied.

[Indications for the long-term continuous follow-up of intracranial pressure in severe craniocerebral trauma].

The findings of clinical examination, laboratory tests, and diagnostic methods of examination were compared with the results of prolonged measurement of intracranial pressure (ICP) in 64 patients with a severe craniocerebral trauma. Seventy-four clinical and laboratory signs and the results of echoencephalography [correction of echoelectrography] and computed tomography were analysed and those found to be most informative on the basis of the "x-quadrant" criterion were distinguished. The distinguished signs accompanying ICP were rated in marks. A scale of hypertension was compiled according to the sum of the marks of these signs. This scale makes it possible to select patients for prolonged continuous ICP control.

[Schizophrenia and selective attention].

A comparative study of selective attention was made on 22 schizophrenic inpatients, 18 non schizophrenic inpatients and a control of 22 non psychiatric adults. Signs of schizophrenia were quantified through the BPRS (Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale) and selective attention was expressed as the capacity to resist a distracting stimulus dimension in the Stroop word-colour test. The results indicated higher distractibility in schizophrenic patients, and a positive, significative relation was found between this interference and the "activation" cluster.

[Neuropsychology of a psycho-organic syndrome caused by idiopathic hypoparathyroidism. Apropos of a case].

A case of organic psychosis secondary to an idiopathic hypoparathyroidism with intracranial calcifications affecting the basal ganglia and the cortico-medullary junction is described. The results of the skull X-ray, cerebral TACO and nuclear magnetic resonance imaging analyses are presented, as well as a battery of neuropsychological tests. In spite of the extensive calcifications found, deficits on the neuropsychological tests were minimal or non-existent; possible explanations of this discrepancy are discussed.

[Acute renal insufficiency caused by Plasmodium falciparum malaria in the last period of pregnancy (2 cases) (author's transl)].

A report of 2 cases of acute renal insufficiency in african women, 8 months pregnant and suffering of malignant malaria. In both cases labor has been induced by artificial breaking of the membranes and use of oxytocin. One of the children was still-born and the other died 3 days later. Delivery has been followed by a resumption of the urinary flow, facilitated by high dosages of furosemide. This diuretic drug when associated with hypoprotidic diet, hypercaloric intravenous infusions of glucose hypertonic solutions supplemented with amino-acids gives a good chance of recovery without extra-renal dialysis.

[Short-latency evoked potentials in evaluation of the severity and localization of traumatic lesions of the brain].

Acoustic stem evoked potentials (ASEP) and early components of somatosensory evoked potentials (SSEP) were studied in 36 patients with craniocerebral trauma and compared with those of normal individuals. The results demonstrate the advantages of using SSEP for appraising the patients' condition. This is manifested by the fact that the ASEP parameters do not correlate with the clinical data on the severity of the patients' condition (Glasgow scale) and the indices of the outcome scale, while, in contrast, the SSEP parameters are in good correlation with the clinical findings.
